Two people I know had that condition. The first was the ex. He went to an endocrinologist who gave him Androgel, which was a testosterone patch, and it caused his blood to thicken up with too many red cells. He had to have his blood drawn regularly until he decided to quit the treatments.
The second person who had the condition had polycythemia vera, which is a pre-cancerous condition. People with that disease could, potentially, develop leukemia. But they might not. Usually they are placed under the care of an oncologist, and they have their blood drawn once a month.
My friend who had polycythemia vera no longer has it...which is very weird. He developed lung cancer, went through chemo and radiation, and the polycythemia vera just disappeared. His blood is normal now.

@Starsandfire Elevated testosterone can cause it...that's for sure. It seems like that's probably what is causing it...but drink more water, too.
