Anyone Else Have To Pay For Your College?

I should graduate in May with Sociology degree (please do not laugh!) But outside of a little help here and there, I paid for everything or took out loans. My prospects for making a lot of money are not great but I might land a job with the state. Did you pay your own way?
Fungirlmmm · 51-55, F
I did indeed pay my own way. I worked at McDonalds, a tanning bed, retail, etc. It was worth every moment.
4meAndyou · F
No. My father paid about $4000.00 in tuition at my first college, and then he decided to hell with that...and he managed to get a new job as a college professor with a State College. One of the perks of that is free college tuition at any State College for your children. So at my next two colleges, I had a free ride courtesy of my father and his efforts, and the State of Massachusetts. I did pay for my own courses later on at Fisher and at the Boston Museum School of Fine Arts.

@JustinOnTheRoad I've been there. My cousin adopted a little boy from Pine Ridge.

@4meAndyou I sure hope you have. It is just right north of there. I am from Pierre. But go to school in Yankton.

@JustinOnTheRoad We just went up for the tour, and we didn't go to Pine Ridge for obvious reasons, and of course we went to Mt. Rushmore.

Yes, I paid my own way. This was close to 40 years ago, and I went to a state school, and had a scholarship, but I was mostly paying my own way through night and weekend jobs.

Good luck with your job search. High tech may be another option, but you need to figure out if you are a good fit.
JustinOnTheRoad · 31-35, M
@Northwest Yes, thank you.
jackson55 · M
When I went to college no one paid for it but you or your parents.
I did, but that was long ago and far away and college was much less expensive.
Nor in mine. As soon as I was a sophomore, I became a dorm advisor - discount - and in junior and senior years, dorm 'supervisor' (housemother) - free room and board and 24 hour duty. Plus teaching assistant and switchboard operator.@JustinOnTheRoad
@MarineBob Must be lots of contributors.

My parents pay for my college
ForeverGrowingOld · 22-25, F
I'm paying my own way. I'll get my associates in business after this summer and my bachelor's in about 2 years. If I need help paying my parents are willing to help out but I have to pay them back after I graduate.

I refuse to take out government loans.
cheesenpickles · 26-30, F
Yes, I am paying my way.

Sociology is a great gateway undergraduate degree. I know a lot of people who are majoring in it instead of English. A friend of mine and continuing on to law school.
JustinOnTheRoad · 31-35, M
@cheesenpickles Yeah, true.
A long time ago, my parents paid my undergraduate tuition and helped me out with grad school.

But it was nothing like it is today, even for State schools.

Academic and athletic scholarships paid for all my school
JustinOnTheRoad · 31-35, M
@TexChik Thanks for rubbing it in. No I am happy for you.
TexChik · F
@JustinOnTheRoad 🤷🏻‍♀️. When they want you they want you
JustinOnTheRoad · 31-35, M
@TexChik 🤭
That change from 1969 to now is almost precisely the inflation rate. Of course, when I graduated, minimum wage was $2.25/hour.
Budwick · 70-79, M
Yes, I did.
But it was long ago and college expenses weren't nearly as stupid expensive as now.
Justgreg · M
The military paid for mine. And good luck in your future career
JustinOnTheRoad · 31-35, M
@Justgreg Thank you and thanks for your service.

@MarineBob
now day colleges has employees making 6, 7, and 8 figure salaries
Really? Do tell. You know many college employees making between $10M and $99M?

How about close $1M to $9M? How many of those?
MarineBob · 56-60, M
@Northwest sr. professors and coaches
Northwest · M
@MarineBob You need to update your information. Senior Professors, at public schools, and even at schools like Stanford, earn less than $300K per year. The President of Stanford made $1.2M. The President of the entire U. of California system, made less than $400K.

Football is outside the range, because athletic programs are profit centers for the top schools. Still, the highest paid coach, made about $8M, but most of them did not even come close to even mid 6 figures.

Try again.

Hi. I need to talk to you about this.
My parents, although I also worked part-time for pocket and book money. One thing I’ve always been proud of was that, even though they would never have asked, I paid them back every penny. I don’t know how students manage nowadays. 😳
JustinOnTheRoad · 31-35, M
@bijouxbroussard That is honorable of you.
@JustinOnTheRoad Thank you. Like with others, we’re talking 40 years ago, when things were considerably less expensive. Very best to you. I would never laugh at a sociology degree. There are many careers where you won’t get rich but would make a great difference in others’ lives. I wish so much our country invested in our citizens by subsidizing education, as is done in other western nations.
