I’m confused

Out side of my work there are a group of people protesting against mining, fair enough. I asked one of them if they were opposed to mining in general. He said he was, I commented that all the fixtures on there musical equipment came from product being mined. I also reminded him, whether he drove a car here or caught public transport, virtually all those things came from being mined. He just stuck his banner in my face and started dancing around like an idiot and tried to stop me from passing. What a fool, I pushed him aside and kept walking.

Common sense and rational thinking are conspicuously absent these days... People just want to be "right" and "cool", looks like that's all that matters now...

@contrails I think you may be right 🤷

@Les02 I'm considering becoming a hermit... I cringe with so many things I read in the news and also some comments and posts here and elsewhere...
😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

@contrails it’s fair to say that the planet and it’s inhabitants aren’t in great shape at the moment 😕

It can be ugly. I passed a huge molybdenum strip mine in Colorado a few weeks ago. The whole side of a huge mountain was chewed up into terraces. The valley below was full of rectangular man-made ponds whose waters were unnatural colors.

There has got to be a better way!

I bet that valley was beautiful before the mine came and marred it.

@JoyfulSilence No doubt it would have been a beautiful place, nobody wants to see the landscape being distorted like that. No doubt they are working on alternative solutions.

@Les02 Still, some parts are pretty.

If I am not mistaken, the mountain being mined is in the distance, to the left. This is the source of the Arkansas River.

Here is info about the mine:

Some of my ancestors immigrated here from Russia to work in a mine and I still have distant cousins there. They are mining geeks I tell 'ya. If it wasn't for the mine, I probably wouldn't be here. Actually, you wouldn't know it's there unless someone told you, it's not like they put those things in the middle of a bustling metro area.

@TamAngel I,m glad they don't as we would all be living in a hole.

A stupid ignorant girl said to me "I think it's cheaper just to dig the stuff out of the earth rather than make it themselves" I was so stunned by her stupidity I didn't know what to say 🤔 So I folded my arms while blinking and nodding my head like the girl on the tv show, I Dream Of Jeannie. She got shitty and said, I'm aware that making stuff isn't magic. I told her my gestures wasn't to demonstrate that making "stuff" was magic, I was trying to make you disappear. She got shitty and stomped off in a huff, and believe it or not she's a highly educated person, god help us all 🤷‍♀️

There ARE a lot of stupid hypocrites around! A colleague of mine catered for a Green Party event - insisted on vegan food - but left all their empty bottles and cans behind, to go to landfill rather than recycling them themselves....
Les02 · 26-30, F
@ArtieKat Sadly a prime example of those that only think of themselves.
ArtieKat · M
@Les02 Don't THINK - full-stop!

I know sometimes mining practices are worth protesting, but mining in general is just silly to protest. The stone age was a long time ago.
Les02 · 26-30, F
@ViciDraco Everything but everything we exist on either comes out of the ground or is cut down. As much as I don’t like it, I also want to survive. People can complain all they like until they have to go to hospital for a life saving operation. The core product that makes the equipment that saves lives is made from minerals, oil and uranium, sadly.
ViciDraco · 36-40, M
@Les02 if we want to save Earth we have to progress to a point where we are a space faring species. Then we can mine asteroids and lifeless planets to our hearts'content. But we'll never get there if we stopped all mining right now.
Les02 · 26-30, F
@ViciDraco Exactly, try explaining that to those idiots.
