Are You What You Consider To Be A "Nerd''?

So as the question goes. Nerd, geek, dork...we all know the kind of people we consider to be one of those names.

At school I used to get bullied and was called a 'nerd' by the other kids. I always wore my uniform properly, wore glasses, sat at the front of class, was the first to put my hand up to answer questions, a teachers pet...you know what I mean.

I was basically on my own. I sat on my own at lunch time, and whenever one of the kids in my form had a party i was never invited. I used to hate school and would go home and cry.

Now I'm older and at University and i kinda see it. I'm at work placement now and even though I can dress in jeans and a hoodie if i want I still dress smartly; sensible skirt and tights, polo shirt buttoned up and tucked into my skirt, glasses even though i usually wear contacts, hair sensibly tied up, plain black flat shoes.

Is dressing like that at 20 how a nerd dresses? Were the kids at school right all the long? Am I just a nerd?
Tatsumi · 31-35, M
I consider myself a nerdling. A student of the ways of nerds, if you will. I was a total jock in school, but my best friends from before kintergarden were mostly nerds. Then, other stuff happened and I became something else entirely. Anyways.

Once you're in college, no one particularly cares if you're a "nerd" or not. Really, at my schools, I never saw anyone ousted or ostricized for being a nerd, at all.

I think that was namely due to your social ineptitude. Not necessarily your interests or adherence to rules. Those traits can be endearing, if the other kids liked you.

While social ineptitude is considered part of being a "nerd," it's really not a mandatory thing. There are a shitload of extrovert nerds or very socially successful nerds. I think that kind of condemnation against nerds didn't go past the 70s or 80s, after people realized, "Holy shit. These people are amazing and can create incredible shit that is both fun and practical. Love those guys!"

In any case, don't sweat the labels. You are what you are. And people will accept you if you try.

@Tatsumi Youre right, no one after high school really cares at all. Had a couple of funny looks at placement over how I'm dressed, but no bad comments. One guy even said I look cute and asked me out.
Mugin16 · 46-50, M
Ah bah. Do not care too much what others say. I like the fact that you dress smartly with a skirt, polo shirt and tights instead of jeans and hoodies.
Mugin16 · 46-50, M
@MaryJo1996 Do they say more intelligent things after or before the interview?
MaryJo1996 · 26-30, F
When being interviewed it's all just cliches. Saying the right things for the fans, etc.

Much more interesting away from a camera or interview.
Mugin16 · 46-50, M
@MaryJo1996 Ok. Good for them.
Bandit2398 · 51-55, M
I always liked nerds better than the "cool" people. I dont think I was a nerd but I was a weirdo. I had low self esteem and had trouble making friends.
When I turned 18 I started lifting weights and became real muscular. At 21 I was a cashier at a convience store and one of my former bullies recognized me. Because I changed so much it took him a while. He then told me I was such a dork but now I looked like a guy he didn't want to mess with. I think he meant it as a compliment but it really hurt my feelings. I got angry and wanted to punch him. But I didn't.
MaryJo1996 · 26-30, F
@Bandit2398 Good. Violence is never the answer.
Bandit2398 · 51-55, M
@MaryJo1996 I completely agree.
daydeeo · 61-69, M
Nerd, geek, both have negative and positive connotations.
Embrace the positive. John Lennon wrote "Working Class Hero." What a nerd he was, eh?
DanielChristensen · 46-50, M
Better not to identify with labels. You're doing you.
MaryJo1996 · 26-30, F
@DanielChristensen True, but when you are bullied and labelled as something for a good chunk of your life it's hard not to use that label.
DanielChristensen · 46-50, M
@MaryJo1996 I hear you. I was with a group of misfits that banded together for strength and we forged strong friendships
MaryJo1996 · 26-30, F
@DanielChristensen Literally no one wanted to be my friend. Can't band together on your own.

I like to think the others were just jealous because despite those things i was always pretty, and had developed early.

The dressing was part of it, but the intelligence was the majority of it. Be proud to be intelligent!
UncleJlovesbrazil · 61-69, M
I was called all those names and more. I went through 20 years with a very low self esteem. Never really TOTALLT got over it. I was physically and verbally bullied growing up in the 60's and 70's.
MaryJo1996 · 26-30, F
@th3r0n You carry 5 knives? Said it before about you...you're a danger to society.

Violence is never the answer. End of discussion.
th3r0n · 41-45, M
@MaryJo1996 what is then? Would you have me let a man kill or rape you when I could stop him because you dislike violence?

Please answer me honest.

And for the record, I would not stand by and let any of that happen regardless of how you felt about it. If I can protect someone from such an attack I surely will.
MaryJo1996 · 26-30, F
@th3r0n Already been raped mate, so not really a discussion i want to entertain in the slightest.

Again...violence is never the answer.

Honey, you're just you. If you are happy and comfortable with the way you are, then nothing else matters. Anyhow, whoever said that nerd/geek is a BAD thing to be? Most of my favourite people fall into that category! Be you, enjoy you.
Justme264 · 70-79, M
Any label is just a label - and a label is surely thought and applied by people other than yourself - so just be yourself and don't worry about what anyone else says. I was like you - now I don't care - far too old to worry about it...........
SoggedNapped · 31-35, M
Lol - I think you are in nerd only insomuch as you over think things. I get and love it- but just glasses and being smart doesn’t mean you are a nerd. It means you are brilliant and need eye correction to see. Lol
MickB · M
There's nothing wrong in taking pride in your appearance. The scruffs are the ones who'll never hold down a decent job.
th3r0n · 41-45, M
I think you're quite cute, but then again I am attracted to cute nerdy girls, so hard to tell.
koos73 · 56-60, M
I was more of a geek. Like you socially but more awkward and not dressed as nicely. But, just as smart!
THEJAKOFHEARTZ · 46-50, M
You dress Primp and Proper! Dress how you wanna dress and be who you wanna be. 😉
UniGirl19 · 22-25, F
We have to be what we are and not care what others think. The problem is we do!
SW-User
both a nerd and a geek.
MaryJo1996 · 26-30, F
@SW-User Because of all of the above?
SW-User
i was a teachers pet. i loved learning i was a good student. i love science. also love sci fi things and comic book things and gaming things. i was bullied too but it was over being a goody good and quiet and extremely thin.
MaryJo1996 · 26-30, F
@SW-User For me it was because of what i mentioned. Got bullied all through high school.
masterofyou · 70-79, M
I bet you looked hot in your uniform... And your glasses .... I would ask if I could sit by you during lunch and we could talk about anything.. Take you to a party we would thumb our noses at them... No they don't understand that girls in school uniforms and glasses is in and us guys think it is real hot..
MaryJo1996 · 26-30, F
@masterofyou I was not considered hot. Been smart and pretty at school was not a good thing.
ArtieKat · M
Mature before your time, MaryJo!
SW-User
Absolutely lol
Degbeme · 70-79, M
I got bullied in school too. Not because I was smart, but because I was the skinny guy. Plus I hung out with the smart ones. Might as well have gone to school with a target drawn on me. You are not a nerd.
SW-User
I consider myself nerdy, but I don't dress up for anything, I despise dressing up. Perhaps I'm a geek maybe, if dressing up constantly is apart of being a nerd. Hmm.
MaryJo1996 · 26-30, F
@SW-User I don't dress up to be anything, I just dress this way because it's how i feel comfortable to go to uni or work placement. When im going on a night out I dress like any normal 20 year old woman.
Why label yourself ?
MaryJo1996 · 26-30, F
It was English.
daydeeo · 61-69, M
@MaryJo1996 American English, please.
MaryJo1996 · 26-30, F
Why lower myself?

In some ways, I consider myself a nerd.
I value knowledge, and prefer not to follow the crowd.
I do wear glasses. Lol
SW-User
I'm probably not a nerd, though I do have some overlapping characteristics... lol.
SW-User
You're not a nerd, and the kids just sound ignorant and stupid.
i was bulled and had no friends at school but for other reasons.
Good for you..very professional and classy at work.
dan177 · 31-35, M
