A Utah mom is upset about a school policy in which sixth grade girls can't say "no" when boys ask them to dance. Should kids be forced to dance?

lilcountrygrl · 36-40, F
Tell me this is a joke. What happens when they're in high school? They're not allowed to say no to sex? Is this a public school?
@lilcountrygrl Not a joke, its for real. And so sad.
Quizzical · 46-50, M
@getcakedieyoung I know... I think it's a ridiculous stance too... I imagine is so that no-one feels rejected! lol

School no longer prepares people for the real world...

This would be reason # 3,496,183 why public schools and political correctness make me want to move to a deserted island.
No they shouldn't. Plus I think it's important for boys and girls to get used to rejection fairly early on so it's less devastating later in life. It's like catching the chicken pox when you're 8 rather than when you're 40

@MrBlueGuy So basically they are demanding you formally add insult to injury in an attempt to spare meaningless feelings.
@MethDozer Yes. Literally.
MethDozer · M
@MrBlueGuy Brilliant!
I would be upset too.

How dare school staff decide what means of comfort a child participates in.

Not being able to say "no"... that's a hell of a policy.
@LithiumDrop Horrible policy.
5thApprentice · 31-35, M
That's a pretty dumb policy. If I was a dad with a daughter at the school I'd be pretty pissed.
@5thApprentice Its our society of "total inclusion." So wrong.

they shouldn’t be forced to do anything they don’t want to. a lot of the time the news reports on parents raging over some ridiculous stuff, but i can easily side with the parent this time
Deadcutie · 18-21, F
I don't agree with that..better learn rejection sooner instead of later, or the suicide rate will quadruple
@Deadcutie exactly. We all will be rejected, deal with it and move on.

@getcakedieyoung doesn't bother me, I'm used to thier corpses toetagged in the refrigerator

Without knowing more details, I'm assuming this either has to do with encouraging social interaction (especially in kids who usually don't) or is meant to shield kids from rejection. The first scenario is cruel to those who are introverted. The second is just unrealistic. If this is a class where everyone must participate, then perhaps that is a different story.
@sciguy18 The teacher doesnt want anyone hurt. Well, kids get rejected, part of life..
DrWatson · 70-79, M
@sciguy18 That is a good point: we need to know whether we are talking about a school dance or a dance class.
DrWatson · 70-79, M
I do not believe that kids should be forced to dance. I also believe that dances in the sixth grade can be emotionally brutal for many of the boys and the girls there -- the boys because they might be too shy and self conscious, the girls because they might feel rejected or because they feel the boys have all the control (and the latter problem is only exacerbated at the school you mention.)
@DrWatson Total agreement.
Utah is full of fucking religious people
lilcountrygrl · 36-40, F
@WorldsForgottenBoy I would say forcing girls to dance would be the exact opposite of what the "fucking religious people" would want.
We live in the fucking third millennium
lilcountrygrl · 36-40, F
From a news article I found:
Prior to the dance, which is voluntary, students are told to fill out a card by selecting five people they want to dance with. The administration says if there’s someone on the card you feel uncomfortable with, the student is encouraged to speak up.
@lilcountrygrl I read it also. Speak up how? you are ugly, you smell, you are stupid?
lilcountrygrl · 36-40, F
@JustLikeGreta I also got the feeling from the way it was written, they'll basically shame you into dancing with Carl the Creeper.
monster007 · 46-50, F
no one should be force to anything... should b a choice
Ah, hell no. I’d be mad too.

My children have been raised with a healthy sense of bodily autonomy. They’re empowered to say no whenever they feel the need to. There’s no way I’d let a school tell them that there are exceptions to that, especially when it comes to social interactions.
So are the girls allowed to ask the boys? And can the boys say no? Or is that so radical that no one there thought of it?
lilcountrygrl · 36-40, F
@SensibleJulie I'm sorry... didn't you read the school rules. We will not tolerate sensible thinking from parents! You're obviously anti-...um... something!
@SensibleJulie No one should ever be forced to dance, whether they be male or female.
@JustLikeGreta No they shouldn't. Though I find it interesting that the possibility of girls asking boys has been ignored as if the school were in a 1940s time warp.
I'd be outraged and take my daughter out of the whole insanely evil school
whoever made that rule needs to be thrown out of the system imo
Carver · 31-35, F
No. That's a little fucked.
hippyjoe1955 · 61-69, M
Sounds like a really stupid policy.
She's a Take One for the Team, Mom.
john146wtl · 36-40, F
They should not. If I were the parent, I would protest, too. This sounds like another way to sexualize kids, & before you know it, rape will be condoned.
@john146wtl It is definitely a way for girls to get used to giving up their rights in favor of boys rights.
What sort of policy is this?Whoever thought of it should be forced to dance until they realize the error of their ways!
vokies · 46-50, M
I think its alright because it gets people to get together to talk. We went to far in this tec world. We need to bring back old time values
testbutton · 51-55, M
Nancy Regan would be pissed!
jackjjackson · 61-69, M
That policy is outrageously bad.
Myself11 · 61-69, M
No it should be there opinion
MethDozer · M
You gotta be screwing with me.
@MethDozer It's for real.

@JustLikeGreta This is absurd. The again it's exactly what you would expect as the SJWs and their ilk keep fighting and injecting their bat crap way of thinking into society.
