I have the landline to send faxes of test results to doctors. I never answer the damn thing as it's usually telemarketers. If I do it's "Sheriff's Office, Fraud Department".
SageWanderer · 70-79, M
@Happymedium Maybe I should get a patent? 🤔💰️
Happymedium · 51-55, F
@SageWanderer
I was thinking the same thing!!
😎💰
SageWanderer · 70-79, M
@Happymedium I'll share! Or maybe we can get some device that could mimic the sound?
Ladyred · 46-50, F
I do, but it's a vintage 1950's phone.. giggles(;
Happymedium · 51-55, F
@Ladyred🤭[c=#BF0080]fannnnncy![/c]
SageWanderer · 70-79, M
@Ladyred In the 1950's we still didn't have rotaries. Operators connected us then.
Ladyred · 46-50, F
@SageWanderer Yes Sir, I have one of them's there's operator phones! giggles(;
Straylight · 31-35, F
I dont even know where I would get a landline phone.
Ambroseguy80 · 51-55, M
@Straylight you could start by stepping on land. ;)
Straylight · 31-35, F
@Ambroseguy80 No way. Underwater for life.🧜‍♀️

@JimBob60 I've used top-up cards but now just use the bank-card registered to the phone. My land-line/broadband service is on direct-debit, as I think most of their customers are.

There are no problems with access where I live,but both portable-phone signals and Internet speed are sore points in many parts of the UK. It's hard for the companies to keep up with demand for ever-more and ever-faster services especially in rural areas/.
There are two problems:

Radio-telephone coverage can be poor particularly in hill country.

Most land-lines now use buried cables except very commonly still, the last few yards to the house. This does limit storm damage, but as many of the cables are still copper, Internet speeds can be very low in areas a long way from the exchange.

So combined, the residents in such areas feel resentful and neglected, when they know people in large towns are getting full service.

'

You certainly have a lot more equipment than I do! Mine is a land-line phone and conventional PC, and a very basic portable phone that as far as I know can't be connected to the Internet. On the other hand I don't use these for entertainment services like films or music.

@JimBob60
I agree the service should be accessible to all, but it's matter of matching resources to install it, to the growing demand.

Someone else on SW told me the Internet speed by cable is very low, in his area of Utah, due to distances.

I did fall for buying a smart-phone for a time but the contract for that alone cost me a lot of money for what I was getting. It was also very difficult to use, so I was missing calls or unable to answer voice messages; and bulky and heavy for something that's mean to be carried in a pocket. I paid off the 2-year contract and sold the phone within the first few months.

I need a regular PC with decent screen and keyboard plus printers to suit both my typing (I find a lap-top physically very awkward, and the software I use, especially a CAD package.

We use a device called an OBi to connect to google voice. Then we use a cordless phone. It's just like having a land line.

🤔interesting and good idea
SW-User
@Happymedium The best part is... Google Voice has texting and voice mail.

So... we have a house phone with text messaging. That is our shared "two factor authentication" number.
Still have it working and functioning as it’s part of the internet connection but rarely use it to make calls unless it’s to companies that I don’t want knowing my mobile number.

Happymedium · 51-55, F
@Peaches
Same....we have both too

🙄ugh...hate paying for the same thing twice, but can't cut the landline loose yet
ArishMell · 70-79, M

🙄and delayed response
ArishMell · 70-79, M
@Happymedium I do not recall ever having such problems in the 20 or so years I have had my own home, at three different addresses, nor previously, when I lived with my parents. So that's four different numbers, I think three different exchanges too.
Celt43 · 46-50, M

[big][c=#1F5E00]LAND, NOOOOOO!!!![/c][/big]
Ambroseguy80 · 51-55, M
@Happymedium I’m actually a firm believer in land lines. The only reason I don’t use it anymore is because I can’t identify which lines are the proper lines to plug into anymore.... somewhere along the way, wires got crossed and I lost track of which were the new lines and which were the old outdated lines in the basement, and I’m too lazy AND CHEAP to find out!!! 😛
Happymedium · 51-55, F
@Ambroseguy80
🤪You can "old school" it and just do the 2 tin cans and a string method
