Americans tend to speak their minds much more than I have seen in other countries. We don't usually risk horrible consequences for doing so. Couple this with the fact that tourists usually see folks who work in the service industry and are often poorly paid it's not hard to see why that foreigner perceived that about us. Americans in general are poorly educated about how well off they really are, too. What we call a poverty level income is a middle class income in most of the world.
