Why is being alive so expensive?

cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
There’s a young man living a very simple life in a shed-size house he built from mostly reclaimed materials such as pallets, he had to buy the windows & door & roofing material but bought most of it used...made his bed and shelves, outdoor composting toilet, outdoor shower, outdoor cooking with wood. He bartered to live in a backyard if he would grow a garden in the front yard (this is near Orlando, Fl.)...he makes money from his blog, and he has several other gardens, rides a bike...he grows his own food (vegan), preserves the food (small chest freezer & canning & pickling), reclaims rainwater for drinking, showering, washing dishes. Composts his food scraps, grows a plant with large fuzzy leaves for toilet paper. Looks like he has about a dozen articles of clothing..spend $10 a month on electric mostly for the freezer. He makes from $8-11K from his blog and I’d be willing to bet he can save half of that the way he’s living.

@iamnikki He didn’t mention that. I’m thinking he doesn’t get sick much with all that fresh air (vitamin D helps the immune system) and his diet and lifestyle. But he would probably have to get some help for low-income if he did get sick. That gets to be more of a risk the older a person becomes. I’ve heard elderly people say they never had a cold or got sick a day in their lives. But you never know with him riding on his bike he could get hit by a drunk that drives off or attacked by some druggie (it’s Florida).

@cherokeepatti yea but eventually something will happen. And i can believe some old folk never got sick. Probably didn't eat much junk and stuff like you mentioned.

@iamnikki Good genes, not a lot of stress to deal with, good family life, lower risk jobs, clean living, faith, good diet, etc. And locale of where they lived, some places have high risks compared to others.

It's only expensive if you indulge yourself.

You think that's expensive? It costs nearly $20K to die, and that's on the low end.
UckfayOuyayOotay · 46-50, M
@SW-User Weirdly that's where the $20,000 tag is from! Weird because the state only charges about $400 for the same service.

Personally when I die I just want a simple cardboard box cremation, the cheaper the better. I don't see the point of spending so much to discard of an empty vessel.

@UckfayOuyayOotay what if people can't afford it?

@SW-User 🤷‍♂️

You need to learn to live within your means and have the self-discipline to pull it off with grace and dignity.

How much does it cost to make a funeral ?
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@Darci Doesn’t have to cost anything if people do it themselves like they used to do. That’s the thing about our modern lives, we’ve contracted out the things we used to do ourselves and we are paying for it.
It can be
one can survive on hardly anything at all
