Why aren't manual transmissions more popular?

I would love it if my 4-cyl. Toyota Camry had one, lol.

CVTs suck! Especially in Nissan.
I prefer a stick too. All my automatic cars have died because of the transmission and never the engine. Could have gotten a lot more miles out of them.

Sadly manufacturers are shifting to automatic transmissions for the "best" driving experience.

The irony in this is if it breaks down then it's gonna cost a fortune to replace the gearbox as compared to that of a manual transmission.

@SubstantialKick Manuals are dying. But you could achieve a higher MPG in a manual generally over an auto.

Driving a manual is way more fun than a CVT too. I'd consider a DSG gearbox over a CVT if I had to choose an auto.

@Beatbox34 I've heard mixed things about CVT's, especially Honda and Nissan. I probably would choose a stick over a CVT if I had a choice.

@SubstantialKick CVT's are normally used in Japanese vehicles and they're known to be super reliable. The only downside is they're super boring to drive and take a long time to shift gears.

DSG's are mostly used in German vehicles are unreliable but fun to drive.

Automatic transmissions are fairly rare over here.

@alan20 Here in the United States they are highly preferred.

@SubstantialKick The British/Irish have a kind of love affair with the "motor car", going back generations - the joys of the open road. We've almost failed to notice that they're not nearly so open these days!
City driving, lazy drivers and an abundance of people who just can’t figure out how to drive manual.

City drivers being so numerous
