Hiccups are caused by peristalsis, which can become an uncontrollable and recurring spasm in the esophagus and the digestive tract. The spasms occur as progressive waves, or contractions.
I actually remember that from my 7th grade social studies teacher, Mr. Walen, who tried to teach us how to cure the hiccups.
He said when the hiccups first begin, stiffen your entire esophageal area, from your stomach to your throat. Do not breathe, and attempt at the same time to burp. You should be able to burp 2 or 3 times while holding your breath. The burping and the stiffened esophageal tract should be enough to stop the hiccups.
The longer you wait, the more difficult they are to stop.

A old teacher told me once to Stare at your index finger. Slowly reach for your nose and touch it.
