I Got Others Caned At School On Purpose

@dorothyanne Quite right too. As a traditional caner if it were me it would be two sets of six of the best, so 12 strokes, for 'visits' after the first.

@MrJMister Excellent idea. I chat often with a real life friend in S Africa, at her Afrikaner school in the 1980s girls were sometimes beaten 2 or 3 times for the same offence if it was grave enough. So for bullying when she was a big girl of 17, it was 6 from the master on duty who saw it, 6 from the head, and to her astonishment, another 6 a few days later when her housemaster heard about it after his holiday.

When I was caught smoking, I "just" got six across my knickers each time.

@Lynda70 ten strokes of the cane is extreme; it could almost be classed as cruelty or abuse. Absolutely no need for such a number; six of the best as the ultimate sanction. The purpose of punishment was correction. not to destroy respect or to create a sense of loathing between pupil and teacher.

@Chroniclewriter A lot of the contributions on these threads do show too many teachers and parents had no respect for, and even hated, even their own children; and enjoyed being cruel.

They certainly equated "respect" with "fear", but in a very one-sided relationship based on power and enmity, not authority and affection.

I wonder if this was from couples not being able to help becoming parents with all the responsibilities and burdens; and from teachers bored with repetitively teaching far below their own academic levels, but staying teachers thanks to the good pay and better holidays than in commerce.

That might have been even more so when education was more based on ivory-tower'd rote-learning, and women having far fewer worthwhile career options anyway. It was just a job, largely uninteresting but better than typing, book-keeping or shop-floor sales.

@JoBlak yes the slipper was used mainly, but a cane was available if needed.The entire hockey got it once( not one stroke)for losing game against the worst school in the county, we thought all we had to do was to turn up, and win easy

@JoBlak The headmaster took her word and did not ask us for our version. He was in no mood to listen any way

@JoBlak It didn't work. I continued to smoke until well after I left school. CP was totally ineffective.

@Disciplinarian Good afternoon, over the years she got a few of us many a sore bottom. classroom caneings across front desk or touch toes. headmaster , if you got told to touch toes, it was only a light caning for him, bit still hurt, if told to bend over his desk you were in for a real thrashing. Yes she had no knickers on at that time, they were in her bag? some teachers would allow us to keep tights on, to much hassle to lower/ remove them. he would have had a good view of our bottooms if we wore own knickers, some of mine offered no protection at all, so might as well been bare

@Disciplinarian Normal classroom caning touch toes, and girls had skirts over back, but boys still kept trousers on. Heasmaster caning,, had to lean over his desk and grip far end and hold on for dear life, if moved r got up it was extra, and 6/10 from him was enough for starters.His caning was so forcefull that if touch toes you would have been propelled forward

But at least you had some revenge.

@ThatMusgraveWoman After a headmaster s caning , could never sit for a day or 2.We had to be care full for a while as teachers had a good idea who was behind what happened.She just got the one sore bottom, we got many over the years thanks to her.

I once failed to produce an essay which my Latin master had set me as a punishment for messing about in class. I lied that I had left it at home. I'm sure that at your school, and most others, I would have felt retribution in the form of the slipper or cane. But for some reason he chose to turn a blind eye, and just told me to produce it the next day.

@JoBlak: I was being a bit ironical, but rather pleased the one who had caused others to be in trouble had had her come-uppance, although of course the whole string of events should never have happened. Ideally.

. CP was rare in my schools, and I avoided it apart from one single, mild incident.

The last part sounds about right, if waiting outside you would see them, some would try not to show any effects until out of sight, a few times if a group were punished at the same time had to stand facing wall hands on head, bottom on fire, dare not risk rubbing it for fear of more of the same
