Why do people say to "sleep on it"?

Is it just so you don't make a decision or say something in the heat of the moment?

I always feel even more angry/stressed/upset/etc the next morning...it's just more time to stew on things lol

To me it's what people say when they can't think of anything good but still feel the need to say something LOL

They just mean to take some time to think about a decision tgatcis needed to be made. A similar phrase is, "mull it over."
In other words, don't make a decision in haste.

You are likely to feel differently about most things in a calmer or even a more neutral mind frame.
