I Used to Get the Cane At School
When I was at school there was regularly a queue of boys and girls (mostly 4th, 5th and 6th forms) waiting to be caned for smoking. I was in the queue, along with a few friends, a few times myself.

I was never caned for smoking but got it once in the 6th form for truancy. Canings often took place straight after lunch and the "victims" had to wait outside the head's office where they could be seen from the main corridor. We often used to see who was in line for a whacking and if you were due to be whacked it was difficult to keep it quiet!

@SW-User Yes - we had a thin whippy canes for 12 -13 year olds which stung - I had that one on my palms and a thicker one for older girls. That was always across the backside. I think it was the 6 strokes instead of my previous maximum of 3 which really hurt

@Rebecca54 Infeel sorry for you getting caned on the hands. I avoided that but did get the strap once and my hands hurt for ages.
Having only had three strokes previouslybthe full six would certainly have hurt as you describe.
I only ever got six or eight so would have loved only three strokes!

@SW-User being caned on the hands stung but looking back they were only fairly gentle taps. It was a talking point for a while - "what was it like?" etc. The six on the bottom were certainly full force!

I was first caned at school when I was 10, after a playground roundup by a an over zealous prefect.
There was a queue of about 15 of us in front of the duty playtime teacher's class.
This was a London school and a lighter junior school cane was used for pupils who misbehaved, it was always given on the palm, normally just one stroke.
I was feeling very nervous, but also a little excited, as I wanted to know what it was like and be able to say "I've had it".
Being caned in a large group by a a less familiar teacher, made it quite impersonal, better than getting it on your own in front of your class by your own teacher!
I was about 9th in the queue. When my turn came, I held out my hand and received a good hard stinging stroke. When the sting had subsided a bit and I was back in my own class, I was happy that I had been initiated!

@SW-User Sounds like a rather civilised form of caning. I do think that relatively minor corporal punishment of the kind you describe was much more sensible, and effective, than lines, detentions and so forth - so long as it wasn’t overused.

@MartinII That's right, 1 stroke was normally enough. The teachers weren't sadistic, they were just doing what they saw as part of their job.

Smoking or drinking were serious offenses .. defiantly paddled and likely to get the belt in addition .. .. ..

@Pop0159 What's "ditching"? In 6th form we could often pass for 18 year olds so getting served in pubs wasn't difficult. The only problem was being seen going into or coming out of them at lunchtime. Smoking on the way to or from school was another caning offence even though at 16 we could legally buy cigarettes.
In sixth form my boyfriend and I were seen smoking on the way to school with a friend who had left school and was gouing to work. It was OK for her but my BF and I both got the cane that day at morning break.

@Lynda70 A few of us got the cane for smoking on the way to school when we were in sixth form. Some teachers would turn a blind eye to 6th formers smoking but some were sticklers for the rules.
My wife say it was the same at her school, she was caned for smoking on the way to school when she was in 6th form.

@NortiusMaximus ditching was coming to school but not going to class .. .. I looked mature at 16 I was served beer (18 age limit). At 17 my girlfriends mother would have me buy her liquor order .. .. I often bought hard liquor from 18 and on .. ..
