Is it wrong to tell your manager you're unhappy you've not been given more responsibilities??

Unless you work for an extraordinary employer, you will find yourself with 80 hours worth of work for 40 hours worth of pay.

Management often earns bonuses, raises and promotions based on their ability to effect major results at or under budget.

Instead ask how to advance to higher positions (since Harvey Weinstein, et al, the answer to this question should be less salacious).

It is good to show yourself able to work faster, more efficiently. (This may not endear you to your peers at your same level.) Find out what qualifications are required for jobs up the food chain and apply your energies to obtaining those qualifications so you are ready when the next opening happens.
In other words you are asking for more work, but not more money.

I wouldn't do it.

That would depend, have you mentioned that you think that you are up to taking on additional responsibilities?

If you have then yes, mention that you are unhappy but if you have not discussed that then it is your fault. He is not a mind reader.

I wouldn't mention the word unhappy, and also being open to any responsibilities could get you a lot more work that you don't enjoy. I would think of one specific thing that you think you could do well and suggest that you would be interested at the appropriate time.

I mean learning multiple tasks during my hours..it actually keeps you focused and involved more with the team..time goes in faster when you're motivated..watching new employees come in after you and end up doing more high-tech or mobile duties..whilst your still standing at a till point all day isnt very fun!!

@All2livefor I see what you mean, in that case yes, if you've been there longer and missing out on doing things that newer people are doing that you'd like to be doing, then it's definitely worth asking.

@All2livefor Learn more tasks, yes....but have your resume up to date then, because this company will never advance you beyond where you are now, no matter what you do. Trust me, I've been there....learn your new skills and use them to market yourself elsewhere where they will be willing to give you a higher paying, more prominent position.

No, and if you sit down and write a letter detailing why you think you deserve more responsibilities, and then sit and chat with your manager, you will probably get what you want.

Yes.
You'll get farther if you request more responsibility instead of saying you're unhappy you don't have more.

@Ynotisay Hahahahahahahaha.....I'd love to the fantasy world you live in. Asking for more work without more pay? That's like giving your employer a gift. If you ask for more responsibilities you can kiss any future raise or promotion goodbye, because now they know they own you.

Wait, you actually WANT to do more work? That will just tell them that you don't mind doing more for the same pay. Don't do it!!!
