In the USA what is the best way to travel reasonably long distances excluding driving a car?

Flying is the best option, there are trains here, but that is very expensive. I have ridden trains in Germany, and that was awesome, but our rail network is mainly designed to move freight, not passengers. Bigger cities have commuter rail, but that only goes so far.

We have a limited rail network, but the quality is poor. A shame, since long ago we had the finest in the world. Busses are an option, but an uncomfortable one. Air travel is really the best alternative.

Bus, or train, A van is way fun.
My favorite is to travel on a nice mountain bike with trailer.
To old to do it now a days.

Airplane. The train is insanely stupid here unless you’re on the east coast.

When traveling long distance in the USA I always fly. It's generally cheap and more convenient than rail or bus...

I've heard the Greyhound bus system is great

Amtrak or plane

Depends on where you are traveling to and from. In cities busses and subway, long distances train or plane, even Uber can be a reasonable way to travel
