In the USA what is the best way to travel reasonably long distances excluding driving a car?

Flying is the best option, there are trains here, but that is very expensive. I have ridden trains in Germany, and that was awesome, but our rail network is mainly designed to move freight, not passengers. Bigger cities have commuter rail, but that only goes so far.
