I've had that before. Yes, there's impingement somewhere. Much of the time, the nerve is pinched where it comes out of the spine, but sometimes, it's the result of a spasming piriformis muscle through which the sciatic nerve runs. Massage could help. Also, Ibuprofen (800MG is a standard dose) or just aspirin can work wonders.

Fill a sock up about 3/4 with rice, tie a knot in the top. Place in microwave with a mug of water, heat a minute or two. You have a heat pack. Once heat is applied you may be able to stretch and pop the muscle giving you relief.
Also pay attention to your shoes, it can cause sciatica pain if they don't fit properly.

have you tried the legs up a wall trick? just scoot your butt allthe way to a wall on your back with your legs up. and let your legs rest straight up against the wall. i think it helps make it feel better
