When you do things simply out of kindness - Kansas Wheat, 1939

People would trade with each other to get matching prints to have enough to make an item of clothing. My aunt used to buy flour in those bags and make us shorts and tops when we were little. So I’ve worn flour-sack clothes too but I could not tell you if i saw photos of those clothes whether it was made from flour sacks or cloth from the dry goods store.

@cherokeepatti how'd you differentiate them? :o

@SW-User To me they just looked like fabric you would buy at the store back then. We were small enough that she could make a little pair of shorts or a summer sleeveless top out of one bag. You can still find some of those bags for sale on sites like Ebay or Etsy.

It would take a special kind of asshole to not want to help someone. Most people feel tied down cause they feel they're helpless or don't have the means. I guess it just depends on how determined one is to do something about a particular situation or how much they believe in themselves to cure social issues.

@Dwari People back then didn’t let things go to waste even if they had money to buy cloth. I’ve seen a farm-lady take a big bag of snuff bags made out of muslin cloth and rip open the seams and flatten them out to sew together in one piece to make a quilt backing. It was a lot of work and muslin cloth was cheap back then.

This is so weird. My friend was just telling me his grandparents used to make handkerchiefs out of flour sacks.

And I was telling him that my grandmother never gave a scrap of worn out clothing away. Instead she would cut off every button to save for the next shirt she would sew, and she would use every bit of wool patched together to make a liner for her crazy quilts.

She also saved plastic bread bags and knotted them together to make enormous balls of "yarn", and she would crochet bread bag door mats.
