I Am a Believer In Education

Trying to help my children with schoolwork from home these past months has made me realize I am not a good teacher 🤣 I appreciate the teachers more and if I could find my old teachers I think they need an apology from me 😳✌🏻🤣

I am a very good teacher in subjects that I have the basics down .
How to cook ,how to repair something ,how to build , play an instrument .
If they are willing to learn ,I can teach ,I trained men when I was in service
even though I myself was only a kid with a 9th grade education.

I was good with engines from helping my Dad repair and rebuild them .
I was good with boats because I worked for my Grandpa in his sea food company .
I was good with weapons because both Grandpa's and my Dad loved to hunt .
A clean weapon was a must with them .

So even though I had quit school and I was only 17 .I had something to offer
So I hear you , my son and home school was a challenge .
I quit school before geometry and algebra was a big deal ,
I picked up some geometry from wood working and fabrication and even rebuilding engines .a tape measure helped me teach him how to add and multiply fractions
Using a speed square and other measuring tools it made it easier to explain the basics of some of his math but I was in over my head .
I was able to show him how to figure out square footage and volume .but when you replace numbers with letters I was lost so I looked up teaching video's so I could learn it myself.
But since I was not comfortable with it ,I got frustrated trying to explain it to him ,I tried getting him to learn it from the video's too ,but all he kept saying is "I'm not you ,I can't just watch someone do something one time and then I have it ,and his tone saying that angered me with him .
The more you learn the better jobs that get offered to you and the less dependent on other you are ,maybe someone will actually need you .

His teachers love him and all of them say he is more then capable of doing the work ,(He is a 6th grader but his evaluation of skills tests show he could be in the gifted program or at least ready for 8th grade )most of his classes are advanced , I had their email addresses and they had mine and God bless them they stayed in contact with me almost every day.
They knew from all the kids I have made sure they got diplomas that education is important to me and oh how I wish there had been someone to care about mine .
But we got him there ,and he passed .
But like you I have a new found respect for them now .

Someone said we should pay essential workers more ,and ball players and entertainers less and I agree .
If you don't see a teacher or a good cop as essential .
well you have not seen a world without them ,I have .
I thank God for them ,they deserve our respect ,and they certainly deserve more pay ,they are not baby sitters ,they are educators and protectors .

Speaking of our police ,people who provide us with our medicines and health care ,basic services we take for granted .garbage collectors ,store clerks
I remember a world without them (or so ready available)
Grow and raise you're own food ,make or repair you're own clothing ,work on you're own car without the money to pay for new parts ,
and keep all you're things safe from someone trying to take what you have .Keep you're family safe and well .then we would go back to sports as a family thing and not something we spend billions on a year ,just to be entertained .

It was said the Papacy stole the Sabbath from God (Saturday to Sunday)
and the NFL stole the Sabbath from the Papacy ,they are one of the most powerful entities on the planet ,and think about it ,its a true statement .
Name a handful of influential and powerful people who are not also involved in sports in some way .our Coach at our high school ,during football season
he is treated like a god ,because our team is good
How did Tim Teabow get to be so famous ,and most of his life he was home schooled?
We put way to much importance on careers we could live without
and not enough on those who teach our kids for sure .

@rckt148 homeschooled my children their elementary and secondary education. You are you children’s first teacher, how to talk, walk, them learning by example. When my children picked up a bad habit, I knew that it wasn’t from other children in their class, it was from Me! They learn to communicate with a wide age group, other adults, various age children, are more prepared in handling aspects in life from not being pushed into a classroom with only peers the same age. There were many times that I wanted to throw in the towel, give up, tie them to their chairs and I loved these kids! I volunteered to homeschool my children because I love them!Teachers certainly have all my respect and handling over 2 dozen children, multiple learning styles, game challenges, maturity.... the list goes on.... and they deserve more pay as they are training and equipping the next generation of our nations leaders!

My daughter continued her education in college and graduated with honors. My son graduated while he was 16, three days after his 17th birthday, I signed him in to the US Marines. He couldn’t vote for his President, whom he was under his direct command, purchase a gun, but was given semi-automatics and grenade launchers to shoot, was a sharp shooter, or buy a drink. Yet he was old enough to die for his country.

@1pebbles Proud of you ,sounds like you did a Great job .
I have raised 10 kids all total ..my 3 daughters and my ex sister in laws 2 girls ,3 of my Grandkids and a bunch of their cousins .(We are still at taking in troubled teens ,getting them back in school and supporting them until they finish high school ,and nudge them to go on to trade school or college .
I had to work while disabled to take care of all of us ,$660.00 a month was not enough to pay for chorus gowns and all the trips they took singing with an ensemble ,with so many trying to take my kids from me again ,because I am disabled ,and I used to be an addict and a drunk.
We also had a family singing group and preformed all over the country together .
The were the first to graduate in my family ,I quit in the 9th grade since I had to support myself since I was 14,it was to hard working a full time job and going to school;
but I did pass the Naval Battery Test at 16 to join the US Coast Guard
I was a boat crewmen /small boat engineer at 17 ,a Coxswain by the time I was 18
All of the kids that lived under my roof (and I was a single parent ) graduated high school ,,3 of them went on to college now they are full time nurses .
(Some don't seem to understand just going to college does not endure you a good job ,sometimes you have to go back to learn a trade in high demand )
My eldest Granddaughter finished high school with 1 year of college under her belt ,she was on the duel enrollment program .she graduated top of her class with honors and a 6 yr full ride scholarship .
My Grandson also finished with a year of college under his belt in aviation .
He is now a lead man for Haco Aviation ..Certified in everything but avionics
Soon he plans to go for that and his pilots licence ,he is only 20 .
My sons Mom finished top of her class ,valedictorian ,she went straight into nursing school ,graduated the only one with over 100 and a 4.0 GPA
Now she is a Nurse as well ,He Mom ,I also helped go to college ,she is also a Nurse with a masters working for the VA as an administrator and on several boards .She was picking Grapes and peanuts for a living when I came back into her life .
So though I did not teach them myself (other then leading by example and preparing them for a tough world ),someone had to make the money
I seen to it they got full advantage of a public education.
As a result of the Swine Flue scare of 1976 I have an auto immune disease eating my spine ..so I have 12 fully decompressed discs ,spurs in both shoulders
both knees bone to bone ,a bad heart and a collapsed lung .
But in severe pain I worked to make a living to see they all succeeded and they have ,now their kids are raising the bar .
I have 1 more to go ,the one that I mentioned
His IQ is over 145 ,but he has one major draw back ..his Mom
She is also a genius ,but due to no fault of her own she became an addict
and she has fought her demons the last 12 yrs .but now she has them under control and she is going for another degree in Psychology (as good of a nurse as she is (and thankfully nothing about her addictions on her record )I don't know why she needs it ,but at least she is once again trying to better herself )
My kids are now all home owners .their kids now all own land to build homes on .
So I guess its not so much about how you get there as it is
You never give up until you do .
With all they have had to deal with ,I am just proud to say mine all have diploma's ,and they all make me very proud .(a lot to be thankful for in this day and age )
It was hell on me getting them there .
I was suppose to be in a wheel chair before I was 45 ,the damage to my spine is extensive ,but I refused to give up ,I was going to see to it my kids had the chances I never had ,,but I thank God you didn't need a diploma to join the service in 1976 ,or no telling where I would have ended up .
Not many from my home town have been more successful then I have been .or as blessed . Though I do come from a long line of men and women to be proud of
though back in their day ,schooling was a luxury few in the south were privileged to get . They were all still very successful
(My Dads oldest Brother and his wife are both highly educated and their Daughter did go on to become a high school teacher as did both of her sons .
I am kind of embarrassed by the length of my posts
But maybe they can inspire someone that feels an education is a waste of time
When today it is a key you just can't be successful without one .

@rckt148 you have done extremely well and can tell that you’re not a quitter! Your philosophy as well, when the going big gets tough, the tough get going! And what doesn’t kill you, makes you stronger!

I was raised by an elementary school teacher who was so stressed out by the time she got home she became the Wicked Witch of the West. She was a substitute teacher, and they used to give her the problem classes because the kids were all afraid of her.

So...let's just say you should also apologize to your teacher's children who used to pay for it when you gave them a hard time. 😉

You realize that you’re child may have been part of the problems in class

It’s difficult to wear so many different hats. Parent, protector, cook, caregiver, taxi cab driver, then adding teacher to multiple subjects! It’s difficult to adjust between the roles.

In recent years I worked as a trainer for a bank, teaching adults and that was difficult enough.
I do have a new respect for teachers, well the good ones at least.

Seriously. My kid asked me a math problem and I really thought wow if you can’t do it in your head why do you expect me to. 🤦🏼‍♂️

I totally agree, as they really deserve the long holidays they get, teaching kids at home is exhausting
