I Am American

I've been hearing more about this confederate monument in Virginia and claims that taking it down will remove part of history. I disagree. Taking down some statue is not going to remove anything.

Those statues are a reminder of the past, good or bad. Anyone that says they are bothered by a statue I think has bigger issues than they are aware of. Taking them down is not going to solve anything. To me, they serve as a reminder of the past, and if the past is not remembered, then it will be repeated, and there are things from the past of this country that should not be repeated.
@minarth008 Then the statue should have a plaque at the base explaining that it was erected by racists 60 years after the Civil War ended, for no reason other than to intimidate the black population. Making believe that it's a legitimate Civil War memorial only perpetuates the error.

No matter what they do, no one is going to be happy....in my opinion..I would just leave it alone. Yea, it wasn't the best freaking time and has a bad history but its still history, you just have to recognize it for what it is.
@JarJarBoom We are not obligated to tolerate Nazis. Take the statue down and melt it.

@LeopoldBloom Oh but you are obligated to tolerate them. They have constitutional rights. Take their rights away and you are giving up your own. If you had a functioning brain you'd have already figured that out. Dumb ass.
@katielass They can bang their gums but I'm not obligated to be polite to those sister-fucking Nazi turd eaters.

@Reboot153 ah, ok. My mistake.

I agree with you. It's our history. Leave it. We shouldn't forget our past or we'll repeat it again.
@Livingwell It's not your history. The statue wasn't put up after the Civil War as a monument to Lee - no major battle was fought at Charlottesville and Lee didn't even have a particular connection to the area. The statue was put up in the 1920s by racists who wanted to antagonize the majority black population. It's a monument to Jim Crow. That's not a part of history that we should remember.

If the put a plaque on the base saying that the statue was erected by racist apologists for slavery who were upset at the thought of black people being treated like human beings, that's different. Or maybe cover Lee's face with a giant turd.

@LeopoldBloom It is OUR history. No American can deny it. Hiding it, removing it from books doesn't make it any less true. Just ask Germany. Embracing it, calling it for what it is, and not forgetting is the only way to possibly not repeat it. Andvyour idea is excellent. A plaque explaining the original intent and why it counters with American values today is the way to go.
@Livingwell Then call it for what it is - Jim Crow racism. We're not going to let you get away with calling it a monument to freedom or a celebration of the contribution of white people to this country. Tell the truth or we will resist you and your attempt to rewrite history.
It's not actually "history." There were no major battles in Charlottesville, and Robert E. Lee had no special connection to the area. The statue was erected in the 1920s during the Jim Crow era for no reason other than to intimidate the majority black population in the town. It's no more a "Civil War memorial" than waving a British flag in Ireland is a "Revolutionary War memorial."

the only way we are going to move forward and get over the past is to except it and by taking down and hiding the bad parts of it instead of making them into learning experiences only hinders our growth the statues that are being taken down need to stay and they need to be labeled for who they were and why it was bad so that we can grow

@dunpender What vandalism? No one defaced the statue or tore it down - but they should have. Maybe next time.
