Do you think it's fair that in Australia if you have over 5 acres of land that you don't qualify for a pension?

Picklebobble · 56-60, M
Governments everywhere are tight like that.
The land will be seen as an asset. And as such the value deducted from any pension provision.
And you're right ! It sucks !
Although, thinking about it. If you were to sell the land you'd probably make a lot more than the value of any pension.

Not necessarily...you should see the land!

@Senorita: But aren't you also subject to annual taxes on the land as well ?
Is it possible to transfer ownership of it to somebody in the family then re apply for the pension ?

@Picklebobble: no meant for the "baby boomers" and the government and people who patronize them!

NO!!! It sounds like the equivalent of the Windfall Provision act in the USA.

The above is why I, a retired teacher, live in one small rented room and share a bathroom with two men and a kitchen with five other people.

So if I get this right, should you work harder than others, sacrifice living at a lower quality of life so that you could have more later in life so you can have 5 acres when you retire then you are punished by the government. If you did not have a choice to pay into the pension over the years they should not have a choice about paying it out.

I find it surprising. Pension should be dependant on your years of service and that alone? What you have done with your hard earned money, and how you have invested should be beyond the purview of the government as long as you pay the legal property tax or whatever is the appropriate tax.

I think that sucks, if it is not your residence or business property you would probably be hit with land taxes on it, why should it exclude one from a pension.
Senorita · 41-45, F
Despite the fact that you've paid taxes, and at a huge rate for NSW! For the last 50 years!?
