Is there any elected official past or present....

That you feel came close (or actually did) to executing the will of the people?

The will of the people is not achievable. The elected leader has to do what is best for the people. Some people will love it and others will hate it. There never will be some huge consensus that everyone agrees on. The great leaders are the ones who do things to better the lives of their people. "Peace in our time" may have sounded much more appealing than "We shall never surrender" at the time they were spoken but the later is remembered fondly and the former is despised.

@hippyjoe1955 I've learned from this bit you shared. Thank you.

@TheunderdogofNY Thank you for the BA. I hope it helps you in your future choices of leader. Pure democracy is mob rule.

Not exactly.

In the UK back in '92 there was a Labour leader who had performed a remarkable turnaround in the Labour party and had put together a very strong 'cabinet' that was tipped to do well in the forthcoming election.

He had united a fragmented party and had given good support by the 'grass roots' of local political party councils around the country and there was a momentum about him where many had expected him to win the election in '94.

Unfortunately he died the year before !
Set the party back another 3 years and the country had to endure an extended period of John Major.

I know several ,one was my Uncle ,My Grandpa before him
He did a lot for our city and others ,
obtaining equipment ,cars and such for officials that didn't take vacations with the Governor

,thats local government of coarse ,,as our mayor where I live now is beloved

But I knew other men of power in government
But I stay out of politics now days
and it would make me mad for someone who does not know crap about how politics works to bash them
All politicians have to do some give and take
They have to have supporters ,thats how they get elected
But not all things are in their hands
When "We the people speak " its with Votes
Not always in line with the politicians promises

I'm not sure about the concept of 'the will of the people'. I can accept 'the will of the majority of the people who ... voted/attended/I know', but there has rarely (never?) been a completely united nation agreeing on a whole package of political programmes. In the UK we have the Brexit squabble and the term 'the will of the people' is bandied about by one side as if it was unproblematic and a conclusive end to debate.

In a liberal democracy there will only ever be an approximation of what many people seem to want on a particular day (polling day) and the day after who can know what is 'the will of the people'?

The closest one COULD come is to do what he said he would do. And yes, we have one. Just one.

Most of them have executed the will of some of the people, just generally different groups.

FDR... Though not so much by choice as by knowing that if things weren't improved that the public was preparing to eat the rich. Something the powers that be should be thinking of today.
