Occasionally we hear rumblings that Texas and/or California want to secede from the nation. How do you feel about this idea?
DDonde · 31-35, M
California would be an enormous economic loss. I don't know about Texas.
Edit: Texas #2 after California. So that would still be pretty bad.
SW-User
@DDonde I mean, Texas has the second largest economy in the U.S., so it would be a pretty big loss, too.
DDonde · 31-35, M
@SW-User Yep.
QuixoticSoul · 41-45, M
@SW-User Texas has a large economy, but is a net drain. CA is a donor state.
Subsumedpat · 36-40, M
I don't think California wants to secede it is more like a lot of people want to get rid of them.
QuixoticSoul · 41-45, M
@jackjjackson The chunk that has the Bay Area in it is going to be rolling in money. SoCal (LA and company) is going to be okayish. Poorer but ok.

The rural/agrarian leftovers, central valley, etc are simply fucked.

Can’t the “leftovers” latch on to Nevada and Utah?@QuixoticSoul
QuixoticSoul · 41-45, M
@jackjjackson Utah would be challenging. Nevada or Arizona could work, I suppose. Not sure why they’d want to, but sure.

It's more like faint whispers, not rumblings. One of these idiots is the former Governor of Texas, a guy who could not name the US Department, he was later put in charge of by Agent Orange.

These people should feel free to emigrate to a place that would accommodate them. We are a United States of America.

@calnative Only if you accept it. He was not elected by a majority of the popular vote, and the 2018 House results, show that he no longer has the electoral votes.
I don't think the Feds should stop any state from seceding by force.

If either State were to get serious about secession, I think we should look into the reasons for it and seriously consider addressing them, especially large states with economies, resources and people that the nation wants to keep.
@sunsporter1649 Exactly my point. Civil wars suck. The last one was on the horizon for 70 years before it happened and multiple efforts were made to prevent it. We should at least make some effort before starting another one.

@calnative We think if the goddamnyankees had stayed home things would be grand here.
sunsporter1649 · 70-79, M
Monroe County, Florida actually did cede from the Union, established the Conch Republic, and attacked the Armed Forces of the United States.

@MistyCee April 23rd, 1982
@sunsporter1649 I saw the wiki but didn't see anything about taxes or services
sunsporter1649 · 70-79, M
@MistyCee I was at the northern border that day, quite the experience.
Xuan12 · 31-35, M
It's unlikely to happen in either case. The logistics, politics, and financial fallout would be devestating.

Good bye California 👋
QuixoticSoul · 41-45, M
@GJOFJ3 It'll never happen, but holy shit - imagine the wealth. Too bad, DC would never let its most functional state go.
sunsporter1649 · 70-79, M
@QuixoticSoul But who will print the poopy maps for San Francisco if the government printing office is no longer operating?
QuixoticSoul · 41-45, M
@sunsporter1649 Which government office?
jackjjackson · 61-69, M
Cut all ties with CA and PR.
