What's your opinion on zoos?

lilangel · 26-30, F
Wild animals should be kept in the wild where they belong not locked in a cage
indyjoe · 56-60, M
@lilangel Most all zoo animals are born in captivity so they were never truly wild, and the majority of the ones taken from the wild today are rescue animals that would not have continued to survive in the wild so they are better off. Zoos also help ensure that extinction does not occur, and many rehabilitate to release back to the wild if possible.

I honestly hate them, caging animals, putting them on display for our amusement and forcing them to live like that isn't the way it was meant to be.
These animals should not be in captivity:

Great apes
Big cats
Elephants
Cetaceans

They are too intelligent and sensitive to be confined in an unnatural environment, no matter how large or well-designed. Exceptions could be made for ones that are injured or otherwise unable to survive in the wild.

A pretty poor opinion overall. I'm on board with rehab zoos or those that take animals that wouldn't make it in the wild. But the vast majority of zoos are just money making opportunities. I think the people who work at them are honorable but I've never bought the line that it's about education. 99% of the people who visit them go home with no greater understanding or respect. It's just a show to enjoy.
Zoos actually play a very important role in today's world. Not only do they educate and entertain the public, but they are the leading contributors and funding for wildlife conservation and endangered species breeding in the planet.

@PrivateHell But zoos don't breed to release. They breed to keep, study and exhibit. There's definitely some value in that. Particularly with endangered species. But it's not doing much to repopulate. And I'm confident that zoos aren't the leading contributor towards wildlife conservation. The Nature Conservancy alone contributes something like $1B a year. No way zoos are cumulatively touching that figure.
@Ynotisay not entirely true on either point. I travel all over the US full time, and visit zoo's in every state I go to. Without fail, every zoo has donation drives and contribute portions of their revenue to conservation. The San Diego zoo alone has contributed a billion dollars (3 years ago when I was there last). And there are thousands of zoo's in the US alone.

As for their breeding programs. Many zoo's use injured animals that cannot be released into the wild to breed. And yes, they keep some of the animals, but they do indeed release others (safety and available habitat permitting).

@PrivateHell You said THE leading contributor. And I say that's not true. And while a few zoos may take in animals for rehab, that's hardly the way most work. Zoos get animals from other zoos. They're bred in captivity and are moved when there's a good chance they'll breed in another location. They're not bringing orangs in from Sumatra. Doesn't work that way. You also don't release an animal that has been in a zoo back in to the wild. They'll die. And captive breeding programs are hardly successful. The reasons are pretty evident. Sorry but their purpose is to entertain. For SOME people, like you it sounds, there's a bigger takeaway when visiting a zoo. But that's hardly the majority.
Poacher protection.. that’s all it should be..

Sad but oftentimes it's the only way to keep some moron from shooting it as a trophy or some loon from Asia thinking its powdered penis will keep him from being impotent

I think they are cruel when we think about it. I mean, it's nice to see animals from all over the world but some of them are used to a climate completely different from ours.

That's where the humans go to be watched by animals, right? 😯

... I think I've been on SW too long. 😶

I've boycotted them all...one day a zoo is the ONLY place we'll see any animals

I liked them a lot as a kid. Not too interested in going at this age, not because I don't like seeing the animals, but zoos are so crowded with little kids running around it's just kind of a pain. Also I'll only go to zoos where the animals are not too cooped up otherwise it's disturbing. San Diego Zoo is one of the best I've ever been too.
