What’s up with everyone saying cats are mean ?
Wow. I kind of want to get a cat, but everyone is discouraging me. 😩

I've lived with cats my entire life. It depends on the cat.
They all have different personalities. my first was terrified of everything and everyone. I think I rough handled her when I was little. When I got older I had to corner her just to pet her.
she was sweet but scared shitless of me.
My other was finicky, she'd give attention but only for as long as she wanted to.
We recently adopted 2. One won't let me pet her at all and the other is the chillest cat I've ever had. He wandered into our home. He just pushed past the door.
He's moms cat because she feeds him but he doesn't care even if you pick him up and move him
I've heard boy cats are generally like that-more affectionate.
so if I were you i'd get a boy.

@BetweenKittensandRiots You’re the second person to suggest getting a male cat. Interesting, I’m surprised to hear they’re more affectionate than the females. I would have thought the opposite. I’ll keep that in mind even though I kind of wanted a female because all my animals even since a child have been males.

I would recommend a small kitten so she grows up with you in her life. We have a really shy cat that we adopted at 6 months of age. She had been abandoned and wasn't properly socialized to people. As a result, we've had her with us for about 4 months but she still spends a lot of time hiding under the bed. We're starting to wonder if she'll ever "get used to" living with us. It takes a lot of patience, to be sure.
@SomeAreBoojums That does seem frustrating...I was wanting to adopt an adult cat because I feel the don’t get adopted as much as kittens. Although, I can see how adopting an adult cat can be challenging in many ways.

@Stark the female i got as a kitten, and the black one as an adult. my mom always told me to adopt kittens because they attach easier, but the black one is more clingy than the female.

@ImRileyTheDog I love all animals too. I’ve always liked dogs better than cats too, but as I’ve gotten older I’ve realized dogs are too much work and kind of like having a child. I don’t plan on getting another one until I have a family and years from now or unless it’s a spaniel, since my last dog was a spaniel and they’re my favorite breeds, but they’re expensive so probably won’t be for a long time.

They have individual personalities, like people. A dog has to respect you, see you as the leader, otherwise they won’t do what you tell them. A cat is [b]never[/b] going to see you as the leader, and definitely won’t obey, but they can love you anyway. When I had a cat I adopted a 2 year old, not a kitten. People warned me she would be “set in her ways”. In fact what it meant was that she’d already been in a home, knew that scratching furniture was verboten—I’d provided a scratching post and she used it faithfully—as she did the litter box and was fairly savvy about keeping herself entertained with toys. She was also very gentle and sweet. She was my first cat, so I was very lucky in that regard. I had her for 14 years.
@bijouxbroussard When I get my own place I’d like to have a pet, and I figured a cat would make a good first pet to have on my own since they’re independent. I’d like to adopt an older one too like around the age of two or so, an adult at least, because I feel like they don’t get adopted as much as the kittens.

Hmm 🤔 yes i remember the time I wanted to get a blue Russian cat, gorgeous creature etc but after reading up on cats and how they are in the home I changed my mind - apparently they walk on counter tops ( not hygienic lol) then there’s the infamous Christmas tree saga haha and let’s not forget those sharp talons .... I prefer dogs. Lol but good luck 😄👍 lol

@YukikoAmagi Yes, I have a hamster, but I won’t be getting a cat anytime soon. I’m planning on getting one when I move out from my parent’s home. The hamster will probably be dead by then because their life span is only about 3 years although I may get another one because I enjoy having hamsters and they’re very low maintenance pets.
