Should children know how to cook?

By @Peaches
Picklebobble256-60, M
Yep !
And learn how to sew a button on.
And how to do the basics of cleaning.
And how to iron.
And how to hang wallpaper.
And how to fix your cistern.
And how to manage money.
And know their basic rights and responsibilities under the law.
And to know what it means to be a carer for somebody unable to help themselves.

To my mind these are basic life skills.

@Picklebobble2 My mom was very adamant that I at least learn how to sew on buttons, but that's the extent of my sewing knowledge. XD
Picklebobble256-60, M
@ScrewThisImDone Yes same here !
Don't have too much to thank my folks for but they did insist I learn all that !
My father taught me how to check and refill the oil in the car; how to change the oil out; fit a new filter etc. how to troubleshoot problems with plumbing or heating....

@Picklebobble2 Oh! 馃槉Thanks for telling me.

I'm glad my mother didn't teach me how to cook. She was a terrible cook!

@hunkalove I KNOW the feeling! 馃槥It's hardest on women growing up though. I was picked on constantly for not knowing how to cook well, my mother never cooked anything?! I slowly learned how on my own and with the help of my friends as time went on.
Well children should maybe learn first
If they like to eat.

Depends a little on the age but in general, being kitchen-competent is a good thing, so that once they get out on their own they're not stuck eating fast food and takeout all the time.
PeachesF
@KingofPizza2 I agree! 馃嵅馃

They should start out with easy meals, it teaches independents, learning is part of growing up...
PeachesF
@ItsRichard I sure wish I would have had that growing up.

Darn Skippy they should, along with cleaning house, mowing the lawn, doing the laundry.
I think by the time.kids are almost out of grade school each would be doing their own dishes and laundry, hell with cooking and what not.
Not to become slaves for.the parents mind you, but to help them become self reliant, and more independent.
Plus if them selves jobless and fall on hard times, those skills could come in handy to.earn extra income in the future.
I think it鈥檚 great to introduce them to cooking at a young age such as doing small tasks in the kitchen that doesn鈥檛 require much effort or harm. It鈥檒l probably help them become a bit more independent and I鈥檓 also sure be beneficial for them in a lot of positive ways. I would say what they could be doing in the kitchen should all depend on their age range though.
PeachesF
@Stark Yes, I agree. It's also a wonderful thing for self esteem, which I had none for the longest time.

Well, depends. My culinary skills are very basic. But I can feed myself if needed. I think that's what's important.
sarabee199526-30, F
@Peaches Lol, well don't think I'm talking luxury or anything ... I'm talking about life in the military! ;)
PeachesF
@sarabee1995 Oh, I see! I come from a military family too. My aunt was in the army and my uncle. My dad was a marine. I was born on a military base called Camp Lejeune.
sarabee199526-30, F
@Peaches Never been there but my grandfather went through it. My equivalent was NS Great Lakes. :)

yes otherwise they grow up not knowing how
PeachesF
@xSharp I had that every day of my childhood or I would have starved to death!
xSharp31-35, M
@Peaches all my cavities came from childhood
PeachesF
@xSharp Mine too, I never went to a dentist until I was around 12 years old. 馃様
ScrewThisImDone26-30, F
Of course they should. Way too many people have no idea how to do much of anything for themselves anymore, and it's not leading anywhere good.
PeachesF
@ScrewThisImDone And if you have "deadbeat" parents it's even WORSE! 馃檨
Taliesin3346-50, M
I let the niece help in the kitchen.
PeachesF
@Taliesin33 Nice! 馃懅馃徎馃
