I don't understand how poor people or people who are rejected from jobs or neglected from society due to health issues or their identity can be proud

At least in my country, they don't care to do without as long as "others" do without. I've heard someone where I'm from say they were willing to starve if it meant brown people didn't get a free ride.

So that explains it here. It's mostly racism.

That's, I suppose, what happens when you have poor people who “see themselves not as an exploited proletariat but as temporarily embarrassed millionaires”.

In my experience these people maintain this belief by blaming others. Anything but the system that runs their country.
