1980's DIY book series - The Knack (both)

24 Home Improvement Books.

The first one was a special price, say, $5, the next 23 were about $11.95 each.
Total cost of approximately $280.
I bought the whole set and was still rather useless at DIY.

You need to put your mind into it. Instruction manuals, charts, and diagrams can help, but you mainly have to work at it and learn from mistakes while leaving your ego behind and recognizing when you might be over your head, when you need to ask for help, and if necessary, when to hire a professional.

If you thought you were going to suddenly become an expert by buying a set of impressive books sized precisely the same to look aesthetic on a bookshelf, I could have saved you $280. Next time ask me before you make such an impulse purchase and repeat the impulse 24 times. 🤨

@MarkPaul Bit late now. I bought those books back in 1984, when I was 22. 36 years ago. 😆

@Gusman Oh, before my time... but still. You could have waited.

I have a tap that's dripping. Can you photo shot the relevant page so I can fix it? Now assuming there are 100 pages in each book I reckon I owe you $0.12 (rounded up) I think I can hack that.

@Ironicman That was 36 years ago. I no longer have the books. No idea what happened to them 🤷‍♂️

@Gusman TBH I've used YouTube over the last 15 years. Repaired a a washing machine, tumble dryer, cooker hood, Dyson. Usually I'd buy new. The parts are so cheap and savings on labour unbelievable. I hate the throw away society although some products are manufactured in such a way they make repairs hard. Always remember to isolate electrics!!⚡

YouTube kinda made those obsolete

practical experience is all that matters when it comes to DIY, theoretical knowledge doesnt cut it you need to do stuff and fail at it
Gusman · 61-69, M
@MartinTheFirst I was okay at plenty of stuff, but plumbing repairs I left to the professionals.

@Gusman What about it do you find to be difficult?
Gusman · 61-69, M
@MartinTheFirst I just think it needs to be done properly, what with high pressure and all that.
Do not want pipes leaking, once buried.

I went to HVAC in highschool and has been pretty damn good at DIY ever since. Well worth my time.
