TWD: What were the writers thinking by fast forwarding 7 years later and not killing off Rick Grimes?

Don't get me wrong, Rick Grimes is one of my favorites along with Negan. But fast forwarding 7 years later is just plain stupid.

Watched the first episode without him last night and I must say, it seems weird. If anyone watched last week's "talking dead", it seemed to intimate that Rick, now whisked away by the helicopter, may be off on some other program tied in to Walking Dead, and that this whole show is going to somehow start looking at this from a global perspective which, I found a bit intriguing.
So, this morning I watched the latest Talking Dead episode with coffee and they said something about whispering walkers......did anyone else notice this? I must have missed it because that went right over my head.

@Freeranger Excellent read. I knew they wore the skin of the dead but I didn't know about the rest.

It's not that I'm that observant, alot of nuance seems to go over my head. I went looking for the intel. I had no idea people were wearing walker skin, so this is all new information.

@Freeranger There was a scene in Season 8 where they showed the Whisperers. That was right after the war between Saviors and Ricks team.
The Rick story will continue. They are doing a spin off about him in the form of movies for AMC.
I like season 9 so far and can't wait to see what the Whispers do.

@GingerPeach Those damn whispers are weird. Did you notice that a lot of Saviors died in the last episode?
@Stereoguy I don't know. We will have to wait and see.

First we had 3 years in the same year and they just have flew this season with the years. It needed a time jump but this was wild. I’m wondering if they will use the missing years as their fill ins with the movies they are going to make?
Synyster · 51-55, M
@Freeranger I agree. She's like a junior leader and already breaking Michones rules.

Man, Carol's a bad ass, burning those saviors. ha! That's something Negan has done.

@Synyster like they say "flame broiled is better than frying." And how about Father Gabriel.......the dude is a STUD! Must be something about that albino eye.
Synyster · 51-55, M
@Freeranger Haha! I know, making out with Rosita, the guy is a stud. lol

Okay, found it. Now, we can see the emblem, but what does it mean? We know that there are two classifications for people; either "A" or "B". Apparently, Rick is on the "A" chopper. I wonder if this designates where they take him as opposed to the "B" group.

seems to be some derivative of a bio-hazard warning. Hmmmm.

I've never watched that show! Is it on Netflix?

@Callmewhatyouwill @Synyster Cool 👌🏻

@SW-User let me just add....if you can stand it, start at the beginning and bring yourself up to speed. You'll cheat yourself otherwise. ;)
@Freeranger @SW-User he's right.

Let's face it as fans. The writers aren't very good at what they do. The writing has never been good on the show and they always panic when in a tough spot.

I cannot believe someone actually misses Carl.
Keepitsimple · 51-55, F
You and I think similar..I liked Dale too :( I agree about the character development. Too much going on that the characters paths are not being developed. They have so much story to tell that even going over the hour doesn’t help so one or the other suffers. @MethDozer

@Keepitsimple I started liking the spin-off series better. The story arcs are more complex and the characters have more depth and growth.

My main critique is the big characters in the main series tend to be too weak to suspend the belief they made it this far. Seriously, who would still have followed Rick at this point? He's consistently making the wrong decisions and is way too lucky. The whole final battle with the Saviours where somehow Eugene perfectly hotloads all their ammo to perfectly destroy their weapons en masse was just too much and too silly.

I watch FWD also, lol. I’d have probably gone after Negan at the end myself, and I’m sure a lot of the people in the real life but for storyline purposes they kept him alive. As for Eugene, his character has been lagging. If they wrote him off I don’t think he would be missed unfortunately. :( @MethDozer
