TWD: What were the writers thinking by fast forwarding 7 years later and not killing off Rick Grimes?

Don't get me wrong, Rick Grimes is one of my favorites along with Negan. But fast forwarding 7 years later is just plain stupid.

Watched the first episode without him last night and I must say, it seems weird. If anyone watched last week's "talking dead", it seemed to intimate that Rick, now whisked away by the helicopter, may be off on some other program tied in to Walking Dead, and that this whole show is going to somehow start looking at this from a global perspective which, I found a bit intriguing.
So, this morning I watched the latest Talking Dead episode with coffee and they said something about whispering walkers......did anyone else notice this? I must have missed it because that went right over my head.

@Freeranger Yes, I heard the same thing about Rick. Probbaly why they didn't kill him off.

I was waiting for those Whisperers to show up, but nothing yet.

@Stereoguy Exactly, he was picked up by Anne and taken in a helicopter.

@Freeranger So, tonight I read up a bit more about one of the new threats. The "whispers" some of the members thought they heard coming from the zombies is actually.....a new threat.

"The Whisperers first appeared in The Walking Dead comics in issue #130. The issue was the fourth to follow the All Out War story, which saw a massive time jump carried out between issues #126 and #127. The group was first overheard whispering about members of Rick's group they had encountered, leading survivors to think they were either going crazy or that the walkers were evolving and starting to talk.

The walkers are not talking, however. The Whisperers wear the skin of the dead and walk among them, keeping their voices to a whisper as a means to blend in. This allows them to move freely through the world without fear of threat from the undead but also allows them to use the undead as weapons.

The group is lead by Alpha, a bald woman whose true name is never revealed"

The other thing I was looking for was whether or not we could learn anything by checking out the symbol of the helicopter's tail rotor. As yet, anyone's guess is as good as mine.

@Freeranger Excellent read. I knew they wore the skin of the dead but I didn't know about the rest.

It's not that I'm that observant, alot of nuance seems to go over my head. I went looking for the intel. I had no idea people were wearing walker skin, so this is all new information.

@Freeranger There was a scene in Season 8 where they showed the Whisperers. That was right after the war between Saviors and Ricks team.
