How about letting us see what groups we have in common with another member, through that member's profile?

Isn't that already a feature?
When you go to that persons profile. Click on groups then you'll see the tick next to a group you both belong to.

Experience Project facilitated that by allowing you to view mutual groups. I'd love to see that feature again.
