There is no issue freezing meat or food. But once you thaw it, it has to be used right away
@Mellowgirl That is a good idea ☺️
Mellowgirl · 31-35, F
@mindlessdrifter why is your comment a fetish...?
@Mellowgirl I pushed the wrong button. Damn autocorrect 😬

Fungirlmmm · 51-55, F
I freeze food for later consumption. I have always been a frugal person. I even have a container in my freezer that i pour bits of leftover veggies or beef that is too small for a serving. When it gets full I take it out and make soup from it. I do not lije to waste anything.
Mellowgirl · 31-35, F
@Fungirlmmm I even freeze fruit for making smoothies or compot for my yogurt.
Retsins all it's goodness
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
The freezer is one of the best inventions of the modern era. I batch cook at the weekend to make sure everyone can eat decently throughout the week. I don't have time to go to the shop every day and I hate wasting food.
Mellowgirl · 31-35, F
@SunshineGirl wanna live with me? So organised. I love it
Mellowgirl · 31-35, F
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@Mellowgirl My daughter and I love baking and cooking together. There is always a surplus, so the more the merrier!
I freeze cooked food all the time because I tend to cook for the week. I’ve never had a problem.
Mellowgirl · 31-35, F
@bijouxbroussard I always thought this was more cost effective.
I think this may be a financial contrasting issue here. They eat from fresh as they shop daily. And feed 2 other mouths too so food doesn't get left over.

I guess they'll either have to adjust or have to start buying fresh to come with them into my home.
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
I do both all the time. When something is on sale I buy a lot and freeze it. I also may cook meat before it goes bad and freeze it.
@JimboSaturn Good point - here in Sweden food is horrendously expensive, so when a good ingredient is on sale, we grab it and freeze it!

And it makes a difference! Last week, Turbot was on sale at 299 SEK/kg and today it's back up to 469 SEK/kg.
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
@Adeptlinguist I also love getting meat that is 50% off because it's close to expiry. I just cook it right away or freeze it. I almost never pay full price for meat.
Iwillwait · M
It really is a mind game that one plays with their food, and their "Some-Day-Just-In-Case," fantasy that they're saving money. The only money saved is the energy of the Freezer because the fuller it is, the more efficient it becomes.
Mellowgirl · 31-35, F
@Iwillwait it's never " just in case" since it's not a stand alone freezer.
Iwillwait · M
@Mellowgirl In the mind it is.
Mellowgirl · 31-35, F
@Iwillwait if you say so.
Oster1 · M
No worries. If stored properly, it's very normal and prudent. 😊🌺
Coralmist · 41-45, F
Freezing meat is definitely normal. I don't typically freeze cooked meat but I believe it should be ok. I have read the main thing is don't refreeze cooked frozen meat once it has thawed out.
Mellowgirl · 31-35, F
@Coralmist thank you. I tend to let a meal cool down and then freeze it. It doesn't happen often but it's not unheard of. Meat that I've just bought tends to go in the freezer and generally doesn't live in there beyond 2 months since I do monthly shops in bulk.
I freeze lots of food. I buy meat in bulk, particularly if it's on sale. You just need to wrap it properly so it doesn't get freezer burn.
Primnproper · 56-60, F
Very normal especially in the current climate with food being so expensive..
We do this all the time because often (as an example) we will make a large pot of refried beans. Cannot eat them all so we will often place several tubs of them in the freezer for later.

Just make sure you let the food (covered, but not sealed) cool to room temperature before you seal the lid and place them in the freezer.

We always thaw at room temp as well.
Mellowgirl · 31-35, F
@Threepio thank you6
CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
Completely normal. I'm not sure about cooked meat but freezing raw meat is a common sense. There are 3-4 piece chicken breast packages and I never need more than 2 pieces so what else to do with the rest? You either throw it away or freeze.
Fresh frozen meat is okay for a very long time as long as you don't refreeze it.
TrashCat · M
Nothing wrong with feezing meat (cooked.or raw). I too buy in bulk and have a stanalone freezer. I also make meals in bulk then put them in individualized containers for later. Make sure you label when you put them in the freezer.
craig7 · 70-79, M
No,it's certainly not a "poor person" thing at all,it's sensible food management - food that has been frozen should be consumed once thawed,within a day or so at most.
I regularly cook more than to eat immediately (especially stews, curries or things like bolognese sauce) and then freeze in single-meal portions. Have done so for years and it’s fine!
smiler2012 · 56-60
{'@mellowgirl] nothing wrong as long as you watch your best before dates it is frugal and shrewd shopping and economical why not
Mellowgirl · 31-35, F
@smiler2012 thank you
HumanEarth · 56-60, F
We freeze all kinds of meat we butcher. From beef, goat, sheep, rabbit, deer, raccoon, fish and whatever else.

We also freeze dry meat do.

- if not google "The Full Freezer" because there's some really useful tips which people share.
Mellowgirl · 31-35, F
@Iwillwait well I presume you prefer it to thaw out first?
Mellowgirl · 31-35, F
@nonsensiclesnail oh and my meat never has freezer burn. I don't even think I'd know what that looks like since I don't leave it in there that long.
Iwillwait · M
@Mellowgirl I'll pass.
fun4us2b · M
It's fine - the trick is to make sure you rotate it - it does get funny if it's in there for too long....
Mellowgirl · 31-35, F
@fun4us2b 2 months max since I don't have a big freezer I tend to eat all food in there and the cupboards before I do another big shop. Frees money up to use elsewhere.
Strictmichael75 · 61-69, M
Make sure the meat you bought hasn’t already been frozen
Vac pack meat and freeze it
Prepared meals can be frozen no problem
Bartleby · 51-55, M
As long as you let it cool a bit freezing cooked food is totally fine and normal. As is freezing raw meat.
Mellowgirl · 31-35, F
@Bartleby i been living like this for 13 year's, and I ain't never experienced a problem yet. All I can say is if they got money to buy meat daily and wanna cook daily go for it. But I enjoy warming food on the days I'm tired asf!

1490wayb · 56-60, M
before freezing break meat down into individual portions. dont freeze-thaw-freeze-thaw whole package
Mellowgirl · 31-35, F
@1490wayb I bought 31 chicken thighs and drumsticks pieces. So I did three large trays and seasoned them 3 different ways. Once they cooked and cooled down they went into containers of 4 pieces each.
Now I have a choice as to what to thaw. For up to 2 months!
justlooking2023 · 56-60, M
shrinkage
iamonfire696 · 41-45, F
This is what I do, I have 2 boys that eat a lot so I buy meat in bulk and freeze it for meals.
iamonfire696 · 41-45, F
@Mellowgirl I make meals and freeze them too. Like batches of chilli, meat marinara sauce, lasagna, home made soups. Then when I am not feeling well I can just grab something from the freezer. It’s much less expensive this way and I know what I have put in it.
Mellowgirl · 31-35, F
@iamonfire696 I totally agree.

He claims that the meat tastes weird when it comes out the freezer and reheating it changes the texture. But I can't say I've experienced that.

I do remember one time I over microwaved something and the mince was crispy in sections 😕🤣😂
iamonfire696 · 41-45, F
@Mellowgirl As long as you’re not leaving it in the freezer for too long it’s fine. And yah over heating it doesn’t help lol.

I wouldn’t be able to afford to feed my kids with the amount they eat if I didn’t buy meat in bulk,
Both are perfectly fine, as long as You get all air out to prevent freezer burn.
