tipping, do you do it ?

A lot of people say, if you can't afford to tip then you shouldn't go to places where tipping is allowed. What do you say about tips and how generous are you ?

I tip when I can, but I hate the practice. I especially hate that it's optional but certain jobs make it essentially mandatory for the employees to survive. It's an ugly little petit bourgeois custom. People are performing a service, you don't have to make them do tricks and ingratiate themselves overmuch as a way of winning your largess. It's kind of degrading when you stop to reflect on it. Just pay the people their wages up front.

To me, the problem is that here they've raised the minimum wage, to include restaurant staff, to $11/hr, on a scale to move up to $15/hr. That sort of skews the normal formula of how to tip.

Some of the restaurants here simply say 'no tipping' and include a mandatory 18-20% "service fee". To me, that sort of takes out incentive for good service. Of course you can add more if the service is excellent.

Other restaurants here have started to have separate tip lines on the bill for wait staff and kitchen staff. Allows you to tip the cook if the food was fabulous, but not if the service was lousy.

Tbh I never got the point of tipping... It's like you're giving extra money to someone who already is paid for doing their job? But I don't either bc I don't work yet. My parents do... Prolly I'll do in the future, but not more than the 10%.

@LvChris: well, in my country, people tend to tip... They are expected to do so, but it's not an obligation. I don't know how much they earn here though

I tip when the service exceeds expectation

I always tip where it's needed. If they're a cashier or something I don't. But for a waiter/waitress I always do. At least 20%.

Its not mandatory. Why should someone stay home if they dont want to tip?

I do tip and try to tip well but if it wasn't a good tip I would not let it stop me from going out to eat !!

In most situations or even if the service is piss poor, I give 15%.(If the service is that bad, I don't go back.)If the waiter or waitress or barmaid is exceptional,I'll tip them greatly, like 50% in some cases.Excellent and attentive service,I've been known to tip whatever the tab was.$20 tab=$20 tip. This is especially true when I go out of town.

I always tip. 20-25%. Don't fuck with the people who handle your food.
