I never knew there was such a job

ethicist
/ĕth′ĭ-sĭst/

noun
A specialist in ethics.
One who is versed in ethics, or has written on ethics.
A person, especially a philosopher, who studies principles governing right and wrong conduct.

Apparently corporations have such folks on staff, trying to keep them on the straight and narrow, I guess so they can be ignored.

Biomedical ethics is a particularly active field, applying moral principles to medicine, healthcare, and biotechnology. It addresses dilemmas like informed consent, end-of-life care, resource allocation, and genetic engineering, navigating complex patient-provider conflicts and legal implications.
@OlderSometimesWiser Thank you. I just ran across it in a Michael Connelly novel The Proving Ground. It’s about a murder case where the killer, mid-teens, developed what he considered to be a genuine relationship with a chat bot. The bot more or less told him it was okay to kill someone who hurts you.

The mother of the victim sued the massive tech company who developed the chat bot. Then ethicists started showing up.
@Mamapolo2016 Sounds like an interesting and quite timely read!
@OlderSometimesWiser It is interesting, to be sure. When you start thinking about the possible malicious uses, it gets downright scary.

One person's definition of ethics can be much different than another's. I used to work for the state university in my state. We had a governor who had to resign in disgrace (a sexual relationship with a subordinate who was about to sue him for sexual harrassment). A few years later our state university hired him to teach ethics. Everyone was in disbelief.
@chuck7882 Yep.
