If you live like everyone else you are going to end up like everyone else
About 2 months ago one night one of the strippers showed me this karaoke bar in town I never knew existed. I loved it so much I go there kind of regularly now and over time have got to know the owner. We will call him Bob.
Bob has been dirt poor and been a millionaire in the same life but he never planned. He lives day to day as he claims. I told him that I could just never imagine living life without planning. But he told me that planning is useless because nothing ever works as you plan. He pointed out about how so many people he knew died of illnesses out of the blue. Or how he got divorced and lost all his money.
Another thing that is different about Bob than me is that he never worked at a job in his life. He always was self employed running some sort of business large or small somewhere.
I just don't know if I could stomach that life myself. Everyone plays up entrepreneurship but I rarely see people talking about generating at least 60k (which is still less than median salary) in revenue after paying for their own health insurance, paying all their employees, and paying money into a 401k.
But I guess high risk leads to high reward as everyone knows.
Bob is about 10 years older than me and it seems the only thing he did wrong was getting divorced so many times. Otherwise he would be even wealthier than he is now.
So was that what I should have done in life? 1. Never get married. 2. Never work at a job, only run businesses, whether it be selling oranges or running a Karaoke bar. 3. Don't plan. Just live for the day?
I can accept never getting married but never working at a job and never planning seems super counterintuitive to me. There must be more to it than what he says.
Just one of the more interesting characters I met this year.
