My father worked for many years for a company that manufactured linotype machines.

@DrWatson Linotypes had mostly been retired by the time I got into it. Pretty much all the dedicated systems I worked on were Compugraphic cold type machines before I was able to transition to DTP on Macs.

My father left that company and did something completely different before linotypes completely went away.
