"Why do we need unions?!"

At 6:15 this morning, the heat index on the factory floor had already reached 91°. For most, they were only 15 minutes into their 12-hour shift working next to heat injection mold machines that reach temperatures of 500° or more.

The average human can only work up to a heat index of 90° safely. Then, the risks start to build, starting with cramps, exhaustion to heat stroke.

The fact is, this factory doesn't have to run. There is literally no reason for a factory making office trash cans, mop buckets, and farm carts to operate. There are no shortages of these objects in the world.

None.

Except profit.

If there were a union here, the people could have these days off, where the heat is literally too dangerous to work in, with pay. Without having to take their own PTO or risk their own health.

For, at most, $75 a paycheck, they could have these days off with pay. They could have cheaper, better healthcare. They could have 8 hour days with more pay than 12 hour days, relying on overtime and the damage to their bodies. Better working conditions than being handed an ice pop, a packet of electrolyte power mix for their water, and a prayer.

For, at most, $75 a paycheck, they could be enjoying these hot days at home, in the pool, at the beach, indoors relaxing and resting their bodies.

Instead, they are here, hoping to god they survive another day in the +100° temps indoors working 12 hour days and waiting for cooler weather.

This is why we need unions. Corporations are abusing the backs of their laborers for profit with no compensation to that labor. Yet people still refuse to understand why unions are necessary.

Totally agree ,people would rather suffer than pay the union dues ,which isn't much compared to the the conditions that they can get for you

@Barebum61 EXACTLY!!!!!!!

The lower cost of healthcare premiums and out of pocket alone should be enough, but getting paid the same or more for 8 hours a day over working 12 hours a day for overtime is not the same thing at all, but they believe they will get paid less without the overtime.

I don't get it. For $75, and that's the elite high end dues, usually its under $50, you get so much for those dues!

Everyone needs and deserves a union. Enforcing workplace and safety rules are just two reasons workers need unions.

It is a sad indictment of the human race that Unions are needed.

@22Michelle This is true, however, power corrupts, abuses and enslaves. It rarely, if ever, does actual good.
