What's the most obvious lie you've ever been told at work?

Many years ago a coworker was off work for a funeral. He had tried to get his check a day early with no luck so he shows up after the funeral. The bosses wife was in the office and says "John has the pay checks with him and I'm not sure where he is". The coworker steps outside to call John, thinking he might could intercept him somewhere between the office and home. John says "the checks are at the office but it's locked and I'm not sure where my wife is". My friend walks back in and says "She's standing right here" and hands her the phone. The ended up firing him, apparently for making them both look like idiots. I never heard who actually had the check. The rest of us were questioned, they had to figure out how much we knew so they could decide which version of the "truth" to tell us.
