Can you please define "real job" for me

I have taken a job in a restaurant delivering orders and cleaning. Honestly i make more here than any factory i ever worked. A month or so ago my friend of years comes up to me and says he just quit his job because they gave him a raise and now he doesn't qualify for welfare anymore and his meds are far more than the 25 cent per hour raise he got. He told his boss i wanted his job. He told me how much i would make and its far less than what i make now. I told him I've been here for a year and make way more than he does. He said "yeah now you can finally quit and get a real job" I said "i like it here" and he said "DUDE! You. Work. In. A. Rest....taur....rant." I said "i know and i like it here." He took a step back and put his hands up and said "whatever." Later on i noticed he had unfriended me on social media and when i tried to text him i was blocked.

I took a few things to storage yesterday and seen him there. He is living in a storage unit. I asked whats going on and he said "do you know how embarrassing it is being seen with someone wearing a restaurant uniform?" I told him if he needs a job we are hiring. He laughed at me and said "I'd rather be homeless til a real job comes along"

A real job is any legal employment that provides a paycheck, no matter how small.

Wow that's kinda misguided and sad.
In these times of total uncertainty and generally messed up thinking all round, if you have a job that provides you a living wage AND gives you job satisfaction, how lucky are you ?

You could tell him if he was more liberal on what a real job is he might get to live in a real place.

All joking aside often people project their frustrations on those trying to help them. Your a trooper for trying to help him out. Seems like his isn't in a place you can help him.

Don't let it get you --you were probably on the receiving end of his frustrations. that is actually interesting. Factory jobs don't often don't pay 1/2 bad. Good for you for moving up the financial ladder.

He says you don't have a real job but I say you moved up the financial ladder by thinking outside the box! Outstanding job (sorry pun quota for the day) @Ragnarock1276
Funny how people look down on certain careers. As a truck driver I was taking home almost $10000/month I make less then half now but people think I've upgraded

@Justafantasy People are so dumb sometimes. 🙄🙄🙄

I have no idea what people mean by a real job. 🤷‍♀️ I guess a full-time contract with stable, guaranteed income or something like that? I don't need a concept of a real job at all, all that matters is if you can pay bills every month and don't ask for trouble by doing shady stuff.

Your friend is a type of a person I would never want to associate with.

It's a historical "everyone agrees" viewpoint, and to be fair it's not without reason. Traditionally manual labor leads to no further promotions, and pays far less than working in a cubicle. That's not necessarily true any more, and the nature of commerce means we can make money doing all kinds of non traditional ventures, and in some cases it's much more than a traditional job (the onlyfans crowd is an obvious example). AI is going to make that even more questionable, the "learn to code" mantra is about to be upended, and almost all functions in a office in front of a computer can be automated.

Do whatever you like and makes you money, try to make sure whatever you do has a parachute option if it ever disappears, and that's all a job needs to be

My God. He seems like absolute trash. Stay away from people like that.

Do what makes you happy and provides financial security. You're a contributing member of society. Don't pay any attention to someone with his train of thought, or lack thereof.

Wow. He better hope he isn't the one that becomes homeless for real. Life has a way of coming around like that. The humbling would do him some good!
AlchemyFox · 36-40, F
Screw that guy. I happen to like working in food too.

It's cheesy to call you trashy though when he's living in a storage unit on welfare 😖
itsok · 31-35, F
He sounds very insecure, to the point of his own detriment. It sounds like a very sad way to live 😕
Why was he so much better when his main criteria for a real job is one that pays low enough to qualify for government help for people who really need it. Quit a job because he did good and got a raise. By his rediculous advice I would realize that if I do the opposite of what he does, I'll get along great.
You have the right idea in finding a job that pays you enough and a job you enjoy doing. You only have yourself to impress, it is your life to live.

I think a job tht you can feel proud of we lik to call tht a real job and it can be anything
GeniUs · 56-60, M
Looking down on somebody doing better than him, you could not make it up.
deadgerbil · 22-25
He sounds very bitter about his own situation and lashed out

Whwn I needed to I took any kind of job I could find. I worked driving delivery trucks, janitorial, security guard, worked on fishing boats in Alaska, whatever I could get. Eventually the jobs got better, I acquired more experience, got paid more. I've been doing administrative work for over 30 years now.
Strawbsy · 26-30, F
He is projecting his insecurities into you…
Piper · 61-69, F
There is no job that is not a "real" one, as long as it is actual employment. More than once in my life, I've had someone disparage a job I had because they thought it was "beneath" me, somehow. That can be really hurtful, coming from someone you've cared about and considered a friend. 😑
FloorGenAdm · 51-55, M
You do you and I'll do me type deal.
WhateverWorks · 36-40
I wouldn’t presume what it be for others, but for myself it would mean a job that can financially support my medical needs, desired lifestyle, and long-term goals with the potential for upward mobility.
meggie · F
You can't control people and tell them what to do. You are happy doing what you do and his boss probably usnt going to hand you his job. Wonder what his motive is?

One that lets you walk with your head held high and sleep peacefully after paying bills.
Applepiedom · 56-60, M
Shows how screwed this world is. And to live on welfare is bullshit when you can work
Adrift · 61-69, F
A real job is a job that pays you real money, otherwise its just volunteer work.
HannahSky · F
Sounds a little mixed up and stressed.
to me a real job is 40 hrs week get paid on Friday,
Lostpoet · M
😑 don't make me hit you
MarineBob · 56-60, M
That happens a lot
He is ridiculous. Honest work is "a real job". It would make no sense to change to a lesser paying job just because he’s a snob. You’re lost nothing of value in that "friendship". 🙁
Renaci · 36-40
Pride and vanity. Americans especially have this dumb ass notition that unless you do something like work in a coal mine or military it's not a "real job". It's a branch of toxic masculinity because real men™ have real jobs™ otherwise your a pussy and gay.
It's a dumbass toxic alpha mentality.
The one your big brother Bob has
