Strange how steel plate has a distinct smell

We purchase Q&T (Quenched and Tempered) steel plate from Belgium.
Every time I Oxy cut it, or separate the sheets, there is a very distinctive smell to it.
I wonder if this is what Belgium smells like 🤔

@Azlotto 😄 I remember the smell of freshly photocopied paper. We used to sniff it in school as well. 😄

@Gusman Thanks for best comment.

Only can say my own experiences.

Once worked in a rebar storage facility. The oil they use on the rebar gave the whole place the smell of the oil.

We at times had to move the rebar by hand when the bands holding them busted.

So you went home smelling like that oil.

@DeWayfarer This is the only steel plate we use that has a very distinctive smell. 🤷‍♂️

@Gusman different countries I suspect do things different ways.

Why I can only give my own experiences. USA still uses USA foundries.

The coating on it? Europe has a lot of rules for what they allow in food additives and likely for other things…if they deem something unhealthy it’s likely to be banned.

@cherokeepatti Maybe it is the Q&T process which imbues it with the smell of the Q&T medium. 🤔

@Gusman not sure what that is but I know some things from different countries smell different. The dyed towels and washcloths from India are good but the ones fromPakistan stink to high heaven. I believe it is the differences in types of dyes. They were breaking out at least one cashier at Walmart who started wearing gloves due to it.

Plasma = quicker, cleaner cut

@SW-User Job lots are cut with Plasma, the scrap is cut up with Oxy/Acetylene.
