For clarity my job is round-the-clock irregular shiftwork as a train driver (what the US people call a 'railroad engineer') and my primary reason to refuse overtime and keep days off is to have regular guaranteed time to spend with my almost 5 y/o daughter. There are people at my worksite who work every single day they can when offered extra shifts and earn nearly double what the normal workers like me are getting, When I was employed as a casual with the company (direct hire not labour hire) until late 2018 I had to just take all shifts offered as casuals are not guaranteed any hours of work.

I work at home for myself as an accountant, and I take time off as I please, though not during tax season.

I used to put in long hours and didn't take time off unless I had to. Didn't do anything for me, just got me used because management knew I'd do what was needed. Eventually woke up to myself, no future in that shit.
