How do you manage your work-life-balance?

Especially if you work like 10+ hours a day?

Very poorly.

@Myzery How many hours per day do you work?
Myzery · 41-45, F
@scooogy When I worked, 10.

Mandatory overtime. 50 hour work week.
scooogy · 31-35, MVIP
@Myzery and why do you consider your work-life-balance as poor?
scooogy · 31-35, MVIP
@Myzery could it be that a "normal" week is 40 hours without overtime?
Myzery · 41-45, F
@scooogy Not sure of your location, but yes. A 40 hour week is standard full time in the U.S.

Basically, I just felt exhausted all the time. I only went to work and them home, for the most part. Went to bed early. Then had to do all errands/housework on the weekends, so only did anything fun a couple times a year. Living to work makes Myzery a dull woman.

@Myzery I'm from Germany, but I've had labour psychology in college and discussed things like work-life-balance. My father works mandatory overtime weeks as well, but in home office. A friend of mine works just as much, but in retail, and has a trip of about 30 minutes home. How much time do you spend on housework in a week? And what other errands do you count in there?

@scooogy I also had a 30 minute commute each way. I have heard that sometimes working from home was worse than having to go to an office. Primarily if one didn't have a separate office where they could close it off and have it out of sight, out of mind. Like people would see their desk or projects and end up spending more hours working at home than they would have at an external office.

I live in a large house (hopefully not for long) so, just dusting, vacuuming and mopping takes 4 hours easily. Laundry can be done during that...so depending on what chores I do, 4-8 hours a weekend. I have a large lawn, so adding in time for lawn care.
Errands are grocery shopping, paying bills and whatever may pop up with the car or pets. But I just wanted to stay in bed and watch tv on the weekends, so if I wasn't doing something that absolutely had to be done, that's what I did. No social interaction.

There was also a period of time where I was taking care of my sick mother, so it was work, errands, chores and caretaking. That was it.

@Myzery Have you ever thought about smart home solutions for saving time?
Myzery · 41-45, F
@scooogy Not yet, but I might check it out when I am employed again. Hopefully my new home will be much more manageable too.
