Depends what you mean by 'Basic needs'.
The problem with working for a living is that you're constantly at the whim of your employer.
Just as our Great Grandparents were ! So in that regard life today is probably just as hard since governments love to court businesses but not people !
Would I work knowing that the 'extra' meant I had more 'choice' in life ?
