Why are people so rude to those who work in fast food or retail?

So, I work in fast food (college student here) and have typically noticed that customers (usually the elderly or suburban moms) tend to get SO angry when something doesn't go their way. I get it, things happen, people have bad days, and sometimes, it is our fault and they have a right to be angry. But it is so frustrating when our store is SUPER understaffed and people think they can just bitch and complain about every little thing. I understand it sometimes, but most of the time I think they are complaining about things that don't even matter. Why do people think they are so entitled?

Because they can be. I think that everyone who works in fast food or retail should have the right to tell rude customers to fuck off. Customer service is backwards. Customers should be grateful to the staff for working so hard at crappy wages to serve them.
@CountScrofula I completely agree. I also think that the "we reserve the right to refuse service" should be used WAY more often.

@marilynmichelle Yeah. Seriously, I think it should be illegal to be forced to be nice to someone who is screaming at you.
@CountScrofula And honestly, the customer is very rarely right. I hate that motto. They know little to nothing about the company and how hard I work just to get them their stupid food.
