What do you do when you are not good at your job?

I tutored two students for exams this month and the results came out. While they didn't fail, they werent happy with the marks. They barely passed and totally not happy with me. I was shocked myself, since my previous students did well. The guy who suggested me to the students felt humiliated because they had to pay a good amount of money to me.
I'm returning the money...but my confidence in my skills shattered entirely. They were my second batch and now I feel that I lost my web of connections already.

hi Topumasum
I think that you are in error to feel shattered and to return the money paid. The students passed and they are responsible ultimately for their performance. You succeeded previously and it is unreasonable to assume your students will always succeed. Also exams themselves are odd events. I failed an important exam years ago and least it the next and got an A. It made no sense to me but that is exam marking.
Be kind to yourself. You sound diligent and serious already so that is enough to ask of your best. That is all a person can ask of themselves.
Best wishes
:)

If they're blaming you, they're probably not inclined to take personal responsibility. Learning is the student's job - teachers provide the opportunity, materials, and inspiration (to receptive students).

@VeronicaPrincess This applies well to a school teacher, but I'm a private tutor.

@Topumasum It still applies, hun - you can't make them learn, they have to try.

You have to try one more time. If those students fail, then you know it is your fault. If they pass, then you will know you can do the job.

You can't make them want to learn. If they don't care about their own grades they will fail regardless of how much you help them.

Don't worry about it as they will have an excellent future as politicians or weather forecasters.

There's always the possibility that you weren't the problem.

Don't over analyze yourself. You gave them the tools to do the job. They didn't put in the effort. You are going to win some and lose some. Learn from what you believe you may do better next time..
pshhhhh fuck that shit. you did your part, if they failed, fuck them. some people don't learn.

How long were they tutored? For one month, or many? It takes time to master a subject...
Terrance · 41-45, M
Why are you blaming yourself?
Topumasum · 31-35, F
@Terrance Because I told them exactly what to write. They could have gotten the same marks without having a tutor. Thats what they said actually
Terrance · 41-45, M
@Topumasum Nah. They seem to be blaming you for their own lack of intelligence...

Hard to tutor stupid people.
Go in and do it half assed?
