I am starting career training again for a remote flexible job and concerns with financial security

For a remote flexible career through knowadays.com for a role with proofed inc the sister company. If I pass with 80% in the becoming a proofreader and becoming an editor courses that they train you in I will get a paid work trial period with proofed inc. If I pass the work trial period I will be a long term freelancer on their platform. The work flow is variable but it would be nice to bring in a few hundred to a thousand or one thousand five hundred extra dollars every month once I get established. It would be even better to make a couple thousand to a few thousand per month with other income streams on top of proofed inc. options I looked into for work that are working with languages and words are translator, transcriptionist, proofreader and editor, writer and blogger, scopist ( legal transcript editor for court reporters). Being a court reporter/broadcast captioner/CART provider would be lucrative but they are very high stress careers. It’s real time transcription at say 225 words per minute with needing at least 98% percent accuracy. For the right people it’s a great career to work with language and words. My other option that is already paid for is skillcrush.com which teaches you visual design, web design and development, and user experience design basics. It’s an online coding school platform. Also another get tech skill to have on top of visual design and web development would be digital marketing. Marketing also allows you to work with creative words.

Right now I’m trying to become a proofreader and editor. You have three attempts to pass both the becoming a proofreader and becoming an editor courses with 80% or higher. The thing is you could get experience with proofed inc and have some work instead of having to chase down clients and market yourself hoping someone will give you a chance. It would be ideal to put something on my resume and get some work without the strains of interviews and having huge gaps in my work history. I haven’t worked in quite a few years now. None of the jobs I had were a compatible fit with my temperament, personality, preferences, or values with the exception of pet sitting/ dog walking and having one client I was an elderly companion for. I have a low frustration tolerance for any ridiculous job demands or obstacles from people . I also had low energy and worked slowly and I hated dealing with the public and working physical labor intensive jobs which completely exhausted and drained me. It was horrible. Now if I pass I will get to do a skilled job that I actually like doing and finishing some courses with certificates of completion and diplomas will help me make a better income. Then I can go back to university to finish my degrees. I would be lucky to make a part time income of $30,000- $ 60,000 per year. Even better would $50,000-$100,000 per year. Starting
Out though part time may be more like $20,000-$ 40,000 if I ever get to make that much. For the first year or two it will probably only be a few hundred to one thousand a month. I even feel hesitant to make more than like $1500 a month because much more than that and I will lose social security disability benefits which is a safety net for me. But proofed inc has had complaints of low pay and inconsistent work flow at times.

Working full time will burn me out even if enjoy my work. I have mental health struggles and don’t want to misconstrued as purely lazy. But if I did work close to full time I would make more money. There are high income skills you can learn to make around $100,000-$150,000 or more if you work full time which I will never make that much money. I feel four days a week is sufficient for working and three days off for other things like hobbies/interests/talents/passions/skillsets/aptitudes is a good balance. I have no desire to work myself to death six seven days a week and not have time to enjoy life. I have no desire to work ten-twelve hour days. Not only that I just don’t have that kind of stamina. That’s why I think part time work suits me best. I don’t want to have to work two to three jobs just to keep a float. I’m willing to scale my life back if that means I don’t exhaust my energy. Also to be happy on the job it needs to intellectually stimulating. I crave flexibility, freedom, independence, autonomy, intellectual stimulation, and creativity. Well creativity isn’t a requirement but it would be nice to have. I have creativity with my hobbies and passions for personal enrichment and fun. Variety on the job is important too such as working with different documents or transcripts. Of course to be honest I will probably only make about a thousand a month on top of disability. My parents say I should not have disability cut off as it is protection for my mental health disabilities and allows me state healthcare coverage which I have to pay $0 dollars for my prescriptions and allows me to qualify for low income housing section 8 or HUD so I would only have to pay a certain percentage of my income on housing and the government covers the rest.

I worry if I make too much it will be too much for social security disability benefits to remain but not enough to be financially comfortable. I will be struggling financially and be barely scraping by. For example $40,000 a year is not enough to live on even if I am careful about my spending. I would need to find a way to reduce the cost of housing and utilities and probably never be able to afford a car on my own even if it’s secondhand. I might have to rely on public transportation or rides from others to get around ( I rely on rides from my parents now and have for three years). I have up to two free medical transportation rides I can take to therapy each month through masshealth. I need a work from home career especially because of lack of personal transportation. Being disabled really sucks sometimes. My parents are my guardians and I’m in the.process of learning to take care of myself. They have been my guardians for about a year and a half to two years now. Getting some work would also help a bit more with my expenses than just social security disability benefits and help them with household expenses that I have at their expense. Besides social security disability benefits my parents are paying for me completely. Getting some freelance work would help me get some more independence.

Eventually my family wants to transition me to some sort of supported independent living or assisted living environment so I can have the experience of living on my own before they get too old and sick. It’s not like a group home which is much more restrictive but I have added supports in place. Truthfully I don’t want to live in an assisted living environment and I don’t want to live in an apartment ( but that may be all I can get. ) I would rather live in a house but would need someone to live with me to help out with for example cleaning snow and the extra upkeep and maintenance as something like a friend and live in companion but where we both get our own bedrooms and bathrooms but share common areas. I have also thought about living in tiny home communities with a small house on wheels which could be rent to own without a credit history check but first I would need to save up the money for it. I have thought of living in a rv motorhome but if I’m not allowed to drive a car right now how will I drive around a rv motorhome? I thought of looking into manufactured and mobile home communities where the rents tend to be cheaper than a standard apartment or house. I probably realistically can’t afford any of these options. I would love to move somewhere much warmer than Massachusetts so I wouldn’t have to deal with the brutal winters and cold fall and spring ( which is tolerably cold) but all my mental health care team is in Massachusetts and my family until retirement are staying here. I could transfer my services to another department of mental health in another state but I would also need the extra supports like rides to go out and help if I had questions about how to pay bills and stuff like that. It is not like I am a fully functional and thriving adult who can drive myself around and afford everything on my own. I am mentally disabled. I’m thinking of staying with my parents for a few more years in their house while I get slowly used to taking care of myself. They say after retirement they might sell the house and move to a house with somewhat less upkeep standards. There is public transportation on demand for people with disabilities where a small bus comes to pick you up at your house, drops you off at your desired location and picks you up again to drop you off home. You just have to call the day before to schedule it.

Another option is shared living. I could move in with someone who is a friend and paid companion to help me with daily things like transportation. They get paid by an organization to take me in and help me. This is called a host home which could be a single person or a family. It’s an option but less than ideal if I want my own space. I know of women who were supportive roommates to one another they had their own bedrooms and bathrooms but shared common areas and divided the bills and kept each other company. Both were professional women and they added a third housemate.
I don’t know for sure what I will pick but no group homes.

Another option would be to marry someone who could financially support me partially and I work part time to make money but could go on their health insurance. Someone I could love and I would lose my disability but someone with a kind and gentle nature that could give me some financial security. That makes me sound like a gold digger I know. I’m never going to get the love of my life back so why not find someone else who can help take care of me and fully understands what they are getting into and does not mind. My parents think this is a terrible idea because what if my spouse becomes excessively controlling and abusive towards me they say. My parents tell me they will leave a disability trust for me and leave both me and my sister with financial assets.

I feel so uncertain . Is it so wrong to want to feel financially secure even if you have trouble working full time? I could have someone I love who is also wealthy pay off my student loans, pay for more courses with certificates and diplomas online and pay for my university degrees online too of course only one or two courses at a time because that’s all I can handle. Someone I could marry so I could work maybe 20-30 hours a week and never have to worry about money again. Someone who could pay most of the bills so I could save some of my money would be nice. I know a strong independent woman is not supposed to have to rely on anyone financially but I am not that strong. I used to think I would never rely on anyone for money as an adult yet here I am. Being with a partner who can provide financially is lot more respectable than being on disability or having my parents still needing to take care of me until I find suitable work that I could do well. I’m not proud of needing to be taken care of but it is what it is. I can still work part time and contribute to the bills somewhat but worrying about being the primary breadwinner is a lot to handle.
