Yes I really think so. Hard to see it happening again though because the cost was so high.
It was ultimately about one country proving to another that their technology was better, and therefore more militarily powerful.
I’m pretty sure that was the political willpower behind it. Imagine getting the taxpayer to fund that sort of thing these days…
Plus it was found that there wasn’t really anything valuable worth exploiting there.
