Quickly losing motivation for going to the gym

I’ve struggled with weight my whole life it constantly fluctuates. I go through phases of being physically active and not. I’ve been going to the gym on and off for the past few months. But I keep getting setbacks. Last month I was really sick for almost 2 weeks and had to miss the gym. This month I’ve been dealing with shoulder and neck pain and it’s been keeping me from going as well. I tried to go and do the elliptical without the arm workout but it still hurt my shoulder. I feel so defeated. I have weigh loss goals and want a flat stomach more than anything but my injuries are making it extremely difficult. I can’t do any of the ab exercises I used to because of it. I also get discouraged when I go to the gym and see people there in better shape than I am. I feel so self conscious. It’s hard not to compare myself to others. Ugh 😩 I wish I didn’t care so much and had more of an F it attitude

It's a personal journey for everyone I think. I'm at a stage where I'm putting on muscle so I don't have a flat stomach, I'm gonna cut my body fat ratio afterwards but my goal is strength.

I find that having a goal other than appearance is what motivates me, for me it's helping me be stronger and more able to do martial arts. I like training for something.

When it's appearance based it's easier to feel negative about the process. You'll get there 🤟 don't put yourself down

@Ryannnnnn thanks for your reply and for being supportive I appreciate it. It definitely is a personal journey for everyone and some struggle more than others. I’m my own worst critic so it’s tough not to be hard on myself. Thanks again

Keep plugging at it. Diet is more important than exercise.

@TexChik I have a pretty healthy diet for the most part. Not perfect. I don’t eat too much processed foods.

@DisarrayedNightshade avoid sugar, bread, and potato

And just as important as exercise for weight loss is your diet and what you eat. There may be some foods you could eliminate that would produce remarkable results if you stick to it.

@DisarrayedNightshade There may be a few things you eat that you don't think much about--processed foods, sugars added, too many carbs, white flower...too much salt...drinking enough water...just some suggestions. Diet is important and most Americans eat a very unhealthy diet.

@Docdon23 100% agreed

@DisarrayedNightshade even diet soda--terrible for you!! and sugar substitutes--mostly as bad as sugar!!

It is very hard to keep up motivation on an ongoing basis. I turned my motivation into a habit and go to gym even if I don't want to. I always feel better afterwards.

@KiwiBird true. I had a pretty good habit of going regularly but then after getting sick and injuring my shoulder/neck it made it difficult to keep going. Especially being in pain it makes it more difficult. Hopefully I’ll be able to enjoy it again

@DisarrayedNightshade I can empathise with that getting injured and not being able to exercise does your head in.

i am going through a motivation problem myself but i am making myself go. I am just not as militant about it anymore.
DisarrayedNightshade · 36-40, F
@akindheart I feel ya. I’m making myself go too. Also restructuring my workouts. Doing things that won’t hurt my shoulder worse than it already is injured.
akindheart · 61-69, F
@DisarrayedNightshade i started back with yoga and now doing a class with weights
Docdon23 · M
There is some gentle yoga you could do if you have injuries.
DisarrayedNightshade · 36-40, F
@Docdon23 I’ve been doing lots of yoga. It does help

What is making you fat is all the fat you eat. That means MacDonalds type places, ice cream, cookies, potato chips, microwave dinners, etc.
DisarrayedNightshade · 36-40, F
@BigBulge I have a very healthy diet I don’t eat fast food or processed foods but still struggle with weight because of medical issues. This post is about my frustration with exercise motivation due to set backs because of being sick and injuries, not the foods I eat
