Lightning Strikes

There was a recent news report of a Staten Island man surviving a lightning strike and only suffering minor injuries. It was presented as if this is something unusual, with 13 fatalities due to lightning strikes occurring in the U.S. so far this year.

While the man in the story is fortunate to survive the strike, it’s not unusual. In fact, 90% of lightning strike victims survive the event. That said, their injuries are often severe. Nearly 75% have permanent or long-term health problems, including nerve damage, chronic pain, hearing loss, and memory loss.
