From boom to bust!

It was the turn of the 20th century, and the city of Galveston seemed destined for greatness. It was one of the busiest ports in the United States, serving as a major gateway for immigrants arriving from Europe in search of the American Dream.

By 1900, the booming city of Galveston had a population of nearly 40,000 people. With one of the highest per capita income rates in the nation, it was often referred to as the "Wall Street of the Southwest."

Everything changed on September 8, 1900, when the Great Galveston Hurricane made landfall. The powerful tropical cyclone devastated the island, destroying thousands of structures and causing millions of dollars in damage. Weather forecasting at the time was primitive compared to today's technology, leaving residents with little warning of the approaching storm. In addition to the hurricane's destructive winds, a massive storm surge swept across the island, causing catastrophic flooding and claiming thousands of lives.

Although Galveston eventually rebuilt, it never regained the prominence it once enjoyed. In the years that followed, Houston emerged as the region's primary port city, marking a shift in economic power that permanently changed the Texas Gulf Coast.
